BULLDOGS DONE IN TWICE AGAIN BY MINOT STATE

For the second consecutive afternoon, the University of Minnesota Duluth was swept by Minot State University in a road doubleheader, falling 10-7 and 14-6 Saturday in Minot, N.D.

In the opening Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference setback, the Bulldogs jumped out of the gate and grabbed a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Senior first baseman Tyler Wojciechowski got things going by smacking a double to left center to drive in junior right fielder Drew Stewart and sophomore center fielder Henry George. Rookie designated hitter Tosten Mann would follow suit in the next at-bat, driving in Wojciechowski with a double to left center. The Bulldogs would add two more in the frame with a RBI single from rookie shortstop McCale Peterson and a bases-loaded walk drawn from George. Rookie right-hander Ben Shepard (2-2), in his sixth start of the 2019 campaign, tossed 3.1 innings for the Bulldogs and gave up six runs on five hits while striking out two and walking three Beaver batters, who used a four-run sixth inning to take the go-ahead advantage.

In the nonconference series finale, the Bulldogs (12-31 overall and 9-22 in the NSIC) got on the board in the third when rookie right fielder Tim Pokornowski's base hit brought in rookie second baseman Frankie Cistaro and Wojciechowski followed up with another base hit up the right side to drive in Pokornowski and George. The Bulldogs would one more in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning but couldn't match the Beavers' (30-14 overall; 22-8 NSIC) offensive attack. Senior right-hander Alex Ferguson (0-1), in his second start of the season, surrendered four runs on one hit while fanning six and issuing four walks in 3.0 innings of work.

Eight Bulldog relievers were used in the pair of losses including sophomores Paul Petit and Liam Blaschko in game one and junior Jaylen Hakes, senior Evan Vick, rookie Zach Matthews, senior Jeremy Thorson, Stewart, and Pokornowski in game two.

The Bulldogs will return to NSIC action this Wednesday, (May 1) when they take on the University of Minnesota Crookston in their final road regular-season contests of the year. Game one is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Crookston, Minn.
