BULLDOGS TAKE BEAVERS TO OVERTIME, PREVAIL 81-75

The University of Minnesota Duluth took Minot State University to overtime, topping the Beavers 81-75. The Bulldogs improve to 12-4 overall while going 9-1 in the Northern Sun intercollegiate Conference. The Beavers are now 3-11 on the year with a 0-10 record in the NSIC.
 
UMD would shoot 54.3% (29-64) from the floor, grabbing 26 rebounds with 10 steals and 12 3-pointers. MISU would shoot 41.9% (26-62) from the floor, grabbing 41 rebounds with three steals and seven 3-pointers.
 
After winning the opening tipoff, the Beavers would score a short two to open the game. Minot State would score another before senior forward Katie Stark would drop a 3-pointer for the Bulldogs first points in the game. Junior guard Ann Simonet would tie the game at six a side before the Beavers would drain a deep 3-pointe to regain the lead, to which UMD would respond with a 3-pointer of its own to tie the game again. The Bulldogs would take their first lead of the game off of a 2-pointer from sophomore Maesyn Thiesen. The Bulldogs would drain two 3-pointers to take a 19-13 lead before Minot State would take its first timeout. After the teams would go back and forth with possessions and trade baskets, the first quarter would end with UMD leading 26-20. The Bulldogs would score first in the second quarter with a short 2-pointer. UMD would continue to apply pressure during the remainder of the quarter. UMD would gain a 36-24 lead before the first media timeout at the 6:50 mark. With the squads trading shots and rebounds, UMD would lead Minot State 39-29 with a minute left in the first half. Stark would score the final basket for UMD with a 3-pointer giving the Bulldogs a 42-31  lead into half.
 
The teams would trade the ball back and forth, battling to score first in the half. Simonet would drain a short 2-pointer to give the Bulldogs a 44-31 lead to open the half. Simonet would drop a 3-pointer shortly after to extend the UMD's lead to 16. The Bulldogs would take a 47-34 lead into a media timeout at 4:49 remaining. The Beavers would score two to bring the score to 50-38 before Simonet would score another layup and junior forward Sarah Grow would score to put UMD up 54-40. The Bulldogs would take a 58-46 lead into the fourth quarter. It wouldn't be until the 8:47 mark that a point would be scored, when Minot State would drain a 3-pointer. The Bulldogs would grab a 3-pointer of their own from Simonet. The teams would trade baskets before the first media timeout, UMD leading 63-56 with 4:58 remaining. Minot State would score first with a short 2-pointer. The Beavers would pull within six at 64-60 with 3:00 left in the game. Minot State would pull to within two points at the 2:14 mark off a short two before hitting a 3-pointer to take a 65-64 lead with 2:10 remaining forcing UMD to take a timeout. The Beavers would score two free throws with 19 seconds left on the clock, grabbing a 67-64 lead. Stark would drain a deep 3-pointer to tie the game with eight seconds left. The sides would be tied at 67, forcing overtime.
 
Minot State would win the tipoff, but junior guard Payton Kahl would score a layup to open scoring in the extra frame. Thiesen would follow with a deep 3-pointer before the Beavers would score a short jumper and call a timeout. Thiesen would score another basket, this time for two to take a 74-69 lead. Grow would score one of two free throws to extend the Bulldogs lead. Thiesen would score two more free throws with a minute left in extra time. Minot would score a 3-pointer, putting the score at 77-72 before Thiesen would again take to the line to score one more before the Beavers drained another 3-pointer to pull within three points before UMD would call a timeout. It would be a tightly contested overtime, but the Bulldogs would walk away with an 81-75 win.
 
Simonet would finish with 22 points, shooting 8-9 from the floor, going 4-4 from beyond the arc, grabbing three rebounds and two steals. Stark would finish with 20 points, 6-12 from the floor, grabbing six 3-pointers, four rebounds and two steals. Thiesen would score 11, going 3-7 from the floor, grabbing one rebound, three steals and one block. Sophomore forward Brooke Olson would score six, going 3-9 from the floor while grabbing four rebounds.
 
The Bulldogs will make their way back to Romano Gymnasium next weekend, playing host to Minnesota State (Jan. 17) before taking Concordia-St. Paul (Jan. 18).
