BULLDOGS UPEND WOLVES AND MOVE INTO TIE FOR FIRST IN NSIC NORTH DIVISON

The University of Minnesota Duluth would take on Northern State University, topping the Wolves 87-79. The Bulldogs improve to 16-4 on the season while going 11-3 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Wolves are now 15-5 on the season, carrying an 11-3 NSIC record. The two teams are now tied for the top spot in the northern division of the NSIC, with UMD carrying the tiebreaker.
 
The Bulldogs would shoot 57.1% (32-56) from the floor, going 57.1% (12-21) from beyond the arc while grabbing 29 rebounds and 16 assists. The Wolves shot 48.5% (33-68) from the floor, going 25.0% (7-28) from beyond the arc while grabbing 30 rebounds and 12 assists.
 
Senior forward Alex Illikainen would score the game's first basket, a short layup for the Bulldogs followed by another layup up from Illikainen. Redshirt freshman Drew Blair would score a layup of his own to give UMD a 6-0 lead before NSU was able to score their first points on a layup. Blair would score a 3-pointer and Illikainen would score a layup and just five minutes in to the game, UMD had an 11-8 lead. Heading into the first media timeout, the Bulldogs had a 14-10 lead. After Illikainen scored a deep 3-pointer and northern responded, senior forward Brandon Myer would score two shots, both going from beyond the arc. Illikainen would score another layup headed into the second media timeout with the Bulldogs on top 25-17. Sophomore guard Mason Steffen would sub in coming out of the timeout and score his first points of the game with just over eight minutes left on the clock. The Wolves would pull within two out of the timeout, 27-25 with 6:35 left in the half. Illikainen would give UMD a four point lead with a short layup. The squads would battle, with the Bulldogs taking a 34-27 lead heading into the final media timeout of the half. It was a possession battle, with the sides trading baskets, Illikainen draining a 3-pointer to Northern State's layup before an NSU timeout with 36.4 left on the clock. UMD would close scoring out with Illikainen putting a basket home, the Bulldogs leading 39-32.
 
NSU would score first out of the break with a layup. The Bulldogs would retake their seven point lead with 17:40 remianing in the half off of a 3-pointer from senior guard Logan Rohrscheib. UMD would take a 52-43 lead into the first media timeout. The sides would battle before Myer would throw one down to give the Bulldogs a 56-43 lead, forcing a Wolves timeout, 12:51 remaining. Rohrscheib drain a deep 3-pointer to give the Bulldogs a 62-46 lead. NSU would chip away and pull the score to 62-52 before UMD would call a timeout, 10:10 left on the clock. Blair would score two straight baskets, drawing a foul on the second and making it to complete the 3-point play. UMD would take a 71-60 lead in a Wolves timeout with 6:02 remaining. NSU would score out of the timeout with a quick layup to pull within nine before the Bulldogs would score three from a short layup and one from Blair, going up 74-62. Going into the final media timeout, UMD would lead 77-64 with just over four minutes left. Rohrscheib would drain a deep 3-pointer with 3:15 on the clock. After making one of two, NSU would pull within 13 points with 100 seconds left. The Wolves would take a timeout with 1:09 left on the clock, Bulldogs leading 80-69. After Myer made two free-throws and Blair made one, NSU would drain a 3-pointer before UMD would call a timeout with 45.8 remaining. The Bulldogs would finish out the game, winning by a score of 87-79.
 
Illikainen would score 29 in the win, grabbing eight rebounds with a steal, two assists and three 3-pointers. Blair would score 23, grabbing three rebounds with three steals, four assists and two 3-pointers. Rohrscheib would put away 19, grabbing two boards, two assists and five 3-pointers. Myer would score 12, dishing four assists, grabbing 11 rebounds and scoring two 3-pointers.
 
The Bulldogs will continue their road trip, heading to Winona, Minn. to square off against Winona State University on Jan. 31.
