BULLDOGS RUN AWAY FROM THE BEAVERS, REMAIN UNDEFEATED AT HOME

The University of Minnesota Duluth returned home and to the win column Friday night with a 73-57 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Bemidji State University at Romano Gymnasium in Duluth, Minn.

The senior trio of forward Brandon Myer, guard Logan Rohrscheib, and forward Alex Illikainen got the Bulldog offense rolling Friday night. Myer and Rohrscheib connected on back-to-back three-pointers and Illikainen converted his first two baskets to give the Bulldogs an early 10-6 advantage. Myer added a two-handed slam dunk to give the Bulldogs (10-3 overall; 5-2 NSIC) points on each of their first five possessions. With just over 11 minutes remaining in the half, Bemidji State (7-4 overall; 4-3 NSIC) took their first lead of the game with a three from the left-wing from Griffin Chase. Illikainen converted a pair of free throws to grab the lead back on UMD's ensuing possession. A pair of three's from redshirt-freshman guard Drew Blair gave UMD 29-22 lead with five-and-a-half minutes to go in the opening half. A couple minutes later, Blair would pull up in transition to connect on his third three-pointer of the half to push the Bulldog lead to 34-26. Rohrscheib added UMD's sixth three-pointer of the half with just over a minute remaining to give the Bulldogs their largest lead of the game at 39-29. 

In the opening minutes of the second half, three's from Illikainenn and Rohrschieb helped push the Bulldog lead back over 10 points at 51-39. With just over 12 minutes to go, sophomore guard Mason Steffen picked up a loose ball and tossed an alley-oop off the backboard for Myer to slam home. Steffen added a three-pointer of his own on the next possession to cap off a 9-0 run that gave the Bulldogs a 60-40 lead and put the Beavers away for good.

Notables: 
The Bulldogs turned eight Beaver turnovers into 16 points, shot 6-13 (46.2%) from beyond the three-point arc, and converted on all seven attempts from the charity stripe in the opening 20 minutes … For the game, the Bulldogs turned 12 Beaver turnovers into 23 points, shot 9-23 (39.1%) on three-pointers, and finished off a perfect night from the free-throw line, converting all 11 attempts… the Bulldogs controlled the glass Friday, outrebounding the Beavers 40-32.

Three Bulldogs turned in double-figure efforts in points Friday: Myer (19 points, 6-14 FG), Illikainen (15 points, 5-9 FG), Blair (14 points, 5-13 FG)… Illikainen also picked up a double-double, adding 11 rebounds.

Up Next: 
The Bulldogs will look to stay undefeated at home and for their sixth NSIC victory tomorrow night (Jan. 4) when they play host to the University of Minnesota Crookston. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at Romano Gymnasium.
