BULLDOGS USE SECOND AND THIRD QUARTER TO POWER THROUGH WARIORS

The University of Minnesota Duluth women's basketball program took on Winona State University Friday evening, topping the Warriors 72-59. The Bulldogs now sit 16-5 on the year with a 13-2 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference record. WSU now sits 14-5 on the year, 10-5 in the NSIC.
 
UMD would shoot 48.3% (29-60) from the floor, dropping 10 3-pointers and grabbing 31 rebounds with nine steals. The Warriors would finish shooting 46.4% (26-56) from the floor, scoring three 3-pointers, grabbing 28 rebounds and six steals.
 
The Bulldogs scored a bulk of their points in the second and third quarter, combing for 51 points in the two quarters.
 
Winona State would open the scoring with a short jumper with sophomore forward Brooke Olson responding with one of her own shortly after. WSU would drop a 2-point jumper before dropping a 3-pointer to take a 7-2 lead, followed by a turnover that would be fouled and WSU taking an 11-2 lead. Senior forward Katie Stark would drain back to back 3-pointers followed by junior forward Sarah Grow scoring a layup before the first media timeout, UMD trailing 11-10. After back and forth play to finish out the quarter, UMD would trail WSU 18-12. Junior forward Payton Kahl would score first in the second quarter to pull the Bulldogs within four. Before the media timeout in the quarter, UMD would battle and take its first lead of the game, taking a 23-21 lead. The Bulldogs would gain a 27-25 lead heading into the media timeout, 3:25 remaining in the second quarter. Olson would drain a short jumper out of the timeout, Kahl following with one of her own. WSU would call a timeout with 1:37 left, UMD on top 34-25. UMD would take a 37-31 lead into halftime.
 
The Warriors would open scoring in the second half, scoring a short 2-pointer with Kahl scoring in response, Olson following with a layup of her own to give UMD a 41-33 lead. WSU would take a timeout after the Bulldogs were able to grab a 12-point 47-35 lead. UMD would build on the lead out of the timeout, grabbing a 20-point lead before WSU would take a timeout leading into the media timeout, the Bulldogs up 57-37 with 4:47 remaining in the third quarter. The Warriors would call a timeout with 1:02 left in the quarter, UMD leading 63-48. The Bulldogs would take a 63-50 lead into the fourth. WSU would score first in the quarter with a layup, scoring five straight to start the quarter. The Bulldogs and the Warriors would battle in the final quarter, with each team vying for possession. UMD was able to hold its lead, calling a timeout with 1:46 left in the game, the Bulldogs leading 72-59. The teams would trade rebounds and steals in the  minute and change, with neither team scoring, UMD taking the win 72-59.
 
Olson would finish with 20 points, grabbing nine rebounds and going 8-14 from the floor. Stark would score 15 in the win, grabbing six rebounds with four assists and five 3's. Kahl put down 14, grabbing one rebound with four assists and went 6-11 from the floor. Grow would score seven with three blocks and five rebounds. Junior guard Ann Simonet would score seven with three rebounds and four assists. Sophomore guard Maesyn Thiesen would dish five assists with three steals in the win.
 
The Bulldogs will end their four game road trip tomorrow against Upper Iowa University at 3:30 PM.
