UMD OUTLASTS BEMIDJI STATE IN REGULAR SEASON TRIPLE-OVERTIME FINALE

The University of Minnesota Duluth finished out their regular season schedule on Saturday afternoon, beating Bemidji State University 91-80 in triple overtime. The Bulldogs finished the game by not allowing a point in the final overtime period. UMD improves to 23-5 on the season, grabbing their 20th Nothern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win on the year. BSU falls to 9-17 on the year, going 6-16 in the NSIC.
 
The Bulldogs finish shooting 41.7% (30-72) from the floor, grabbing 39 rebounds with 12 steals. The Beavers would put up 41.8% (28-67) from the floor, grabbing 44 rebounds with seven steals.
 
The Bulldogs would win the tip-off, sophomore forward Brooke Olson drained the first two points of the game with a short jumper. Olson would score the next basket in the game, grabbing a 4-point lead to open the game. After the Beavers scored their first point from a free throw, junior guard Ann Simonet followed with a layup to take a 6-1. UMD would take an 8-3 into a media timeout. Junior forward Sarah Grow hit a layup out of the timeout, but BSU followed with a layup of their own. Grow would go back the other way and score again. UMD would take a 10-point lead with senior forward Katie Stark hitting a shot from beyond the arc with 2:54 remaining. The Bulldogs would take a 15-11 lead into the second quarter. Grow opened up the second with an in tight jumper to grab a 6-point lead. The Beavers would respond with a deep 3-pointer and a layup to cut the lead to one. Sophomore guard Maesyn Thiesen made two free throws to regain a 3-point. UMD would take a 21-16 lead into a media timeout. Junior guard Payton Kahl would hit two free throws out of the timeout. Kahl would follow with a layup for another two. Heading into halftime, the Bulldogs would lead 31-24.
 
The teams would trade rebounds before BSU opened scoring with a layup but Olson would follow with a tip in to regain the 7-point lead. Olson would make a free throw but the Beavers responded with a layup. UMD found themselves up 37-28 with 4:36 at a media timeout. Olson scored two free throws out of the timeout to gain a 9-point lead followed by Grow scoring a layup to lead by double digits. The Bulldogs kept strong to finish out the quarter, grabbing a 10-point 45-35 lead. Olson dropped a quick jumper but BSU scored a jumper in response. The teams would go back and forth, trading baskets before the Beavers cut the lead to eight. Stark would drain a layup and keep the lead to double digits before BSU drained a 3-pointer. Heading into a media timeout, UMD would take a 57-49 lead. Thiesen would hit a free throw out of the break but the Beavers made a layup to respond. Grow made a short jumper with 3:05 remaining. BSU would cut the lead to four with 2:02 left in the game at 60-56 heading into a media timeout. Stark would get UMD rolling again with a layup in tight, forcing the Beavers to take a timeout. BSU would pull to within four with 41 seconds with the Beavers calling a timeout. The Beavers would pull to within two with two free throws, forcing UMD to take a timeout. BSU tied the game with seven left on the clock with a layup. The sides would take a 62-tie to overtime.
 
Simonet would score a free throw to open scoring and grab a 1-point lead. The Beavers would take a 64-63 lead with 4:25 on two free throws. Stark would score a layup and draw a foul, sinking it and taking a 66-64 lead. Simonet drained a 3-pointer to take a five point lead with 2:19 left. The Beavers pulled to within one after making a layup with 50 seconds, UMD calling a timeout. Kahl hit a deep beyond the arc shot to take a four point lead and followed with a monster block with 14 left. After BSU scored two free throws, UMD would call a timeout. Simonet would draw a foul, making one and BSU scoring a layup to trail by one. The Beavers would foul with 2.1 seconds left, Thiesen scoring one but BSU would tie it up at the end of the first overtime to force a second overtime.
The Beavers would win the tip-off but Grow would score first for the Bulldogs in the second overtime with a layup. Stark would score two free throws and give the Bulldogs a four point lead. After making one of two and cutting the lead to three, the Beavers would score a layup with just 20 seconds to trail by one. Thiesen would draw a foul and score both to regain a three point lead. BSU would drain a 3-pointer with just three seconds on the clock. 80 a side to end the second and force a third overtime.
Scoring would be silent from both sides until Stark scored a jumper and Thiesen followed with a layup to take a 4-point lead. Thiesen would take to the line and score both to take a 6-point lead with 1:38 remaining. The Bulldogs would hold tight and finally take the victory 91-80.
 
Stark would finish with 24 points, six rebounds, three blocks, two steals and an assist. Grow would finish with 18 points, grabbing seven boards. Olson would score 15 with three assists, five boards and one steal. Simonet scored 12, dishing three assists and grabbing two rebounds. Thiesen dropped 12 with four assits and seven steals. Kahl score 10, dishing two assists with a block and steal each.
 
The Bulldogs will host the first round of the NSIC playoffs at Romano Gymnasium on Wednesday, Feb. 26 as the No. 1 seed, taking on the No. 8 seed of the Southern Division in Upper Iowa University at 5:30 PM.
