BULLDOGS RIDE OLSON, GROW'S STRONG PERFORMANCES TO FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN

The University of Minnesota Duluth extended their winning streak on Friday evening with a 64-56 win over Augustana University. The Bulldogs improve to 18-5 on the season, going 15-2 against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opponents. The Vikings fall to 13-8 on the year while going 9-8 against NSIC opponents.

The Bulldogs would shoot 40.4% (23-57) from the floor, grabbing 43 rebounds with nine steals and five blocks. The Vikings would finish shooting 33.3% (21-63) from the floor, grabbing 36 rebounds, nine steals and four blocks.

After winning the initial tipoff, the Vikings would strike first in the contest. Sophomore forward Brooke Olson opened up scoring for the Bulldogs, nailing a deep 3-pointer. Senior forward Katie Stark would hit a jumper from beyond the arc to give UMD the lead with 6:52 left in the first quarter. Heading into a media timeout, the Bulldogs would hold a 9-6 lead. The Vikings tie the score at nine a side before junior guard Ann Simonet would drive home a layup. After the first quarter, Augustana was able to tie things up at 13 a piece. Junior forward Payton Kahl would score first in the second quarter for UMD, dropping in one free throw before the Vikings would take back the lead with eight minutes left, scoring a two to go up 15-14. The sides would battle for the lead with Stark nailing a 3-pointer. UMD would take a 23-19 lead with 4:52 left into a media timeout. Kahl would extend the lead out of the break with an in tight layup. Olson would extend the Bulldogs lead to 10 with 1:30 left in the quarter at 33-23 before Augustana was able to drain a 3-pointer. Heading into halftime, UMD would take a 34-29.

Olson would drop the first points in the second half with a short jumper. Simonet would follow shortly with a short jumper. The two sides would battle for possession with the Bulldogs taking a 45-38 lead into a media timeout. Augustana would drip two free throws in out of the timeout, trailing by only five before freshman guard Taytum Rhoades would drain an in tight layup and draw a foul, making the basket to complete the 3-point play. Heading into a media timeout with 1:41 left in the quarter, UMD would hold a 48-47 lead. The Bulldogs would score four points out of the timeout with the Vikings drawing a foul and scoring both in the process. UMD would take a 54-49 lead into the fourth quarter. Before the first points would be scored in the quarter, Augustana would call a timeout with 8:46 remaining. Junior forward Sarah Grow would score the first points with a fade away jumper to open scoring in the quarter. Grow would score another jumper shortly after the Vikings made a layup. The sides would battle back and forth with UMD owning a six-point lead with just under four minutes at 60-54. Olson would extend that lead with an in tight jumper. UMD would take a timeout with 2:06 remaining, leading 62-54. With 48.0 seconds left, the Bulldogs would again call a timeout. Augustana would draw a foul and score both free throws with 29.3 left on the clock. Grow would draw a foul with 18.8 left, scoring both and forcing a Vikings timeout. UMD would ride their defense into the final buzzer, beating Augustana 64-56.

Olson finished the game recording a double-double, scoring 17 and grabbing 11 rebounds, also snagging two steals. Grow would put up 14, grabbing nine rebounds with four blocks and a steal in the contest. Simonet finished with nine points, grabbing four rebounds with three steals and five assists. Kahl dropped seven points, grabbing two rebounds with two steals and three assists.

The Bulldogs will play their second game of the four-game home stand with Wayne State College tomorrow at 3:30 PM in Romano Gymnasium.
