BULLDOGS ROLL PAST WILDCATS, REMAIN UNDEFEATED AT ROMANO GYMNASIUM

The University of Minnesota Duluth extend its win streak to five straight games with a 77-54 win over Wayne State College on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs now sit 19-5 on the year while going 16-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Wildcats fall to 16-8 while going 11-7 in the NSIC.

UMD would shoot 47.0% (31-66) from the floor while dropping seven 3-pointers, grabbing 37 rebounds with seven steals and eight blocks. WSC would finish shooting 34.0% (18-53) from the floor, grabbing 35 assists with two steals and five blocks on the day.

The Wildcats would strike first with an in tight layup after winning the opening tip. WSC would start the game with a six-point run before the Bulldogs would get on the board with a layup coming from sophomore forward Brooke Olson. Olson would follow shortly after with another layup to pull UMD within two. UMD would pull within one when junior guard Ann Simonet would nail a deep 3-pointer. They would take their first lead with just under six minutes when sophomore guard Maesyn Thiesen drove the lane for a quick two. After battling for the remainder of the first, the teams would be tied 22-22. Olson would drain a short jumper and draw a foul, making the basket and completing the 3-point play to open the second. UMD would grab a 37-28 lead into a media timeout. The Bulldogs would manage to score 20 before the half would end, holding WSC to just eight in the quarter, taking a 42-30 lead into half.

Thiesen would open up the second half with a 3-pointer, with Simonet draining one of her own to follow. The Wildcats would follow with eight straight point to pull with 11 at 50-39. The Bulldogs would take a 50-42 lead into the first media timeout with 5:43 left in the third quarter. Junior forward Sarah Grow would score one from in tight, putting UMD up 54-42, with the Bulldogs keeping the pressure in before WSC would score a short jumper to pull within 16 at 58-42. UMD would take a 60-46 lead into the fourth. The fourth would start quiet, with the first basket going to the Wildcats with a free throw. Grow would respond with a short jumper. Thiesen would follow with a layup of her own. The Bulldogs would take a 64-49 lead into a media timeout. Grow would draw a foul after making a basket, scoring the free throw for the 3-point play. Senior guard Taylor Schneider would hit a 3 three before WSC would hit a short jumper with just over three minutes remaining.  Freshman guard Ani Tschida would hit a short two points with under a minute remaining. Sophomore forward Lauren Miller would nail a short two as well as the final basket, giving UMD a 77-54 win over the Wildcats.

Grow would finish with 21 points on the afternoon, grabbing four rebounds and three blocks. Olson would score 13 with six rebounds and one block. Thiesen would score 12, scoring two 3-pointers with five assists and three rebounds and two steals. Schneider would score 10 on the day, dishing four assists and two 3-pointers.

The Bulldogs continue their homestand, hosting Northern State on Feb. 14 at 5:30 PM in Romano Gymnasium.
