The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team picked up its second win in a row with a 2-1 road victory over Concordia-St. Paul Friday evening.
The Bulldogs controlled possession early, out-pacing the Golden Bears up and down the field. The two goals for UMD came midway through the first period, and goalkeeper Sophia Grenz kept UMD in the game through the final whistle.
Jackie Jares got her second goal of the season at the 22:05 mark to put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0. Jares was able to evade CSP's goalkeeper, Jessi Jordan, who came out of her net early, to tuck the ball in and give the Bulldogs momentum.
The goal was Jares' second of the season, after she scored her first in the Bulldogs' home contest against Rockhurst in early September. She is now tied with Emilia McGiffert in leading the team's goal scoring efforts; both have put up two goals so far this season.
That momentum paid off six minutes later. Anna Tobias, who picked a good time to score her first career goal, took a page out of Jares' book and pulled CSP's Jordan out of her net before slotting the ball in and doubling the Bulldog lead.
Lauren Singstock was credited with assists on both goals, setting up both Jares and Tobias . This is Singstock's second game in a row with two assists; she now leads the team in points with seven.
Concordia-St. Paul was able to cut the Bulldogs' lead in half in the 51st minute, after the Golden Bears' Sophie Pawlshyn was able to pull defender Shannon King out of position and cut in on Grenz to place the ball in the far side of the net.
Grenz had a commanding presence in tonight's game, stopping 11 of 12 shots for a .917 save percentage. As the game progressed and both teams started putting the pressure on each other, it was Grenz who provided a stalwart presence in the defensive end and ultimately kept the Bulldogs ahead until the final whistle.
"From the beginning we came out with a lot of energy," said Grenz after the win. "Everybody was on the same page about what we wanted to accomplish today. Throughout the game we fixed our mistakes quickly and adjusted to how they were playing. We took advantage of our chances right away."
The Bulldogs will look to add a third straight victory when they face Minnesota State on Sunday. Kickoff against the Mavericks is set for 1:00pm.
