The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer program more than held their own in a high-energy, high tempo affair against No. 13-ranked Bemidji State University Friday afternoon, but ultimately fell 1-0.
The Bulldogs put together a strong defensive performance against a team that has been putting up big numbers this season -- the Beavers are currently second in the conference in goals scored with a 2.333 average per game.
Jennifer Norris got her first career start in goal this afternoon and played the entire 90 minutes. Norris had 1 goal against and made four saves.
The Beavers thought they got on the board in the 11th minute after a free kick from a foul on Emilia McGiffert, but the goal was called off for offsides and the game was deadlocked until the 27:49 mark, when the Bulldog defenders got out of position and Beaver forward Allyson Smith was able to slot it in behind Norris, who came out of the net to defend.
Jennifer Norris received a yellow card at the 70:48 mark after a collision with a Beaver player. Bemidji was awarded a penalty kick, but Allyson Smith -- the lone goal scorer this afternoon -- hit it off the crossbar to keep the Bulldogs within one goal.
Erin Walpole and Emilia McGiffert each had a shot on goal this afternoon. Julia Osborne and Nora Griffin-Wiesner added a shot each as well.
The Bulldogs rallied after the missed penalty kick, pushing the Beavers through the 90th minute.Â
UMD now travels to Crookston on Sunday. Kickoff against the Golden Eagles is scheduled for 1:00pm.
