Today, the University of Minnesota Duluth Baseball team faced off with the Wayne State Wildcats in the rubber match of their three game NSIC series. The game, which was scheduled to commence at Noon, was moved up to 9:00 AM CT due to forecasted inclement weather. The Wildcats would down the Bulldogs 4-2 to take the weekend series two games to one.
Â
UMD would jump out to a quick early lead after
Anders Brown would shoot a ball out to left deep enough to score
Henry George giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Russ Tanner was on the mound for the Bulldogs and he did not disappoint. Tanner was brilliant and held the Wildcats off the scoreboard until the fourth inning when the Wildcats manufactured an unearned run to tie things at one a piece. With the score tied in the top of the seventh, the Wildcats would grab a short-lived lead via a solo homerun. The Bulldogs however, would answer in the bottom half of the inning as
Trevor Gustafson would single through the left side bringing home
McCale Peterson to tie things at two. In the top of the eighth Tanner would leave the game with a runner on second who would eventually score the game winning run on an RBI single, therefore crediting him with a loss. All in all Tanner pitched seven and two thirds innings, surrendering only three hits, two earned runs, no walks and fanning 10 Wayne State hitters. Wayne State would add another insurance run in the top of the 9
th bringing us to our final score of 4-2.
