BULLDOGS SPLIT SUNDAY DOUBLE-HEADER WITH UMARY

Today, the University of Minnesota Duluth Baseball team welcomed the Marauders from the University of Mary to town for a non-conference double dip from Wade Stadium in Duluth. The Bulldogs took game one by a score of 5-1 and dropped their second game of the day by a score of 14-1. With today's split the Bulldogs move to 7-17 on the season.

In game ones seven inning contest, UMD would jump out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning as McCale Peterson singled back through the middle for his first of two rbi's in game one as Henry George came across to score. Ben Shepard towed the slab for the Bulldogs. After a rather routine first inning Shepard would have to battle in the second and third innings to get out of trouble and keep the Marauders off the scoresheet. Tim Pokornowski would help Shepard's cause in the top of the second inning as he took what looked to be a routine sac fly away from the Marauders with a great throw from medium depth right field to cut down the runner at the plate. The Marauders however, would break through in the top of the fourth inning as this time their fly ball to right field would be deep enough to score their runner from third on a sac fly. The Bulldogs would respond in the bottom of the fourth taking the lead for good on a play that saw Mccale Peterson take off to steal second, which in turn opened the door for Pokornowksi to head to the plate with the ball on its way across the diamond. Both runners would be safe and the Bulldogs would take the 2-1 lead. UMD would come right back in the bottom of the fifth as they added insurance markers on a Pokornowski RBI single, Anders Brown HPB, and a McCale Peterson sacrifice fly which brought us to our final score of 5-1. Shepard would go five complete innings on the mound for UMD on the day and was credited with his second victory of the season. He surrendered only four hits, one earned run, and three walks while striking out one. Mitchell Waletzki and Liam Blaschko both saw one inning of work in relief for UMD.

Game two took on a much different tone. UMary would get on the board early and often scoring a combined ten runs in the first three innings of play. The lone bright spot for the Bulldogs came from the bat of Trevor Gustafson as he sent a ball well over the fence in left field in the bottom of the third to garner his first big fly of the season. The Marauders would hold the Bulldogs scoreless the rest of the way and their pitching staff would only surrender five hits to Bulldog hitters in game two. A Braeton Wixo grand slam in the top of the eighth inning would be the final blow delivered by the Marauders as the game would end in the bottom half due to the ten-run rule. Wyatt O'Bey started on the mound for the Bulldogs and he would be charged with the loss in this one. Daniel Turner got the win for the Marauders his first of the season.
