BULLDOGS TOP HUSKIES IN LATE 5-4 COMEBACK VICTORY

The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball squad geared up for a makeup game this late afternoon, squaring off against St. Cloud State University. It was a battle till the end, with the Bulldogs coming out on top 5-4, to improve to 8-17 on the year while the Huskies dropped to 10-10 overall.

Sophomore lefty Russ Tanner got the nod to start today, and he threw a solid game for UMD. Tanner threw 5.2 innings, facing 26 batters and whiffing seven. He gave up three earned runs on the day and walked four with five hits. Senior righty Paul Petit came in relief for Tanner and collected the win, throwing 2.1 innings, striking out one and giving up three hits. Senior righty Liam Blaschko grabbed the save today, throwing one complete inning and giving up one hit.

SCSU struck first in the first inning after John Nett reached base on a walk. He stole second and third (stealing on a strike out). He ended up scoring on a wild pitch in the next at bat. No scoring would occur until the top of the third when the Huskies tacked on two more runs. Nett walked a second time and came across to score again when Paul Steffensen doubled down the right field line. Steffensen scored later in the inning on an error.

The Bulldogs found their way onto the board in the bottom of the fifth when senior infielder Brodie Paulson singled into left field to reach first. Sophomore infielder Alex Wattermann bounced one up the middle to score Paulson later on. Wattermann reached third later on and scored when senior outfielder Henry George grouded out to second base.

SCSU grabbed a two-run lead in the top of the sixth. Drew Bulson reached on a single to right field. He moved up to second on a base hit and scored on a drive to center field by Nett.

UMD never gave in, scoring three times in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the lead. George reached on a one out single and advanced on a wild pitch. Junior infielder Brandt Kolpack snuck one through on the left side to move George to third. George scored on a double down the right field line by junior outfielder Tim Pokornowski, moving Kolpack to third. Kolpack scored on a pass ball on the ensuing batter and Pokornowski moved to third. He scored when infielder Anders Brown dropped a bunt down to bring him in.

Blaschko came in, gave up one hit and sealed the deal.

UMD finished with nine hits and two errors. Kolpack finished the game going 3-4. George went 2-4 on the day with an RBI. Pokornowski grabbed a hit (2b) and an RBI, Brown finished with an RBL and Wattermann grabbed the final RBI.
