For the first time in over a year, the University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team played a true home game in the city of Duluth. The Bulldogs returned home after having played the first thirteen games of the 2021 season either at a neutral venue or on the road. The Bulldogs fall to 4-11 (2-10) NSIC.
Â
Mitchell Waletzki was on the mound for the Bulldogs in game one, after getting the Peacocks out 1-2-3 in the top half of the first, the Bulldog offense would come out firing right off the bat. A
Tosten Mann RBI single would bring home
Brodie Paulson for the ballgames first run. An
Anders Brown RBI single would score
Tim Pokornowski and the Bulldogs would take a 2-0 lead into the top half of the second inning. Waletzki would pitch a great second inning inducing a 6-4-3 tailor made double play to end the top of the second. The Peacocks would get to Waletzki in the third inning, two singles and a walk would load the bases. Upper Iowa then got runs via a base on balls, sacrifice fly and RBI single (one earned run and one unearned run) to take a 4-2 lead. This score would go on to hold until the bottom of the seventh when UMD showed life and nearly completed the comeback. In the bottom of the seventh a

Â
Pitching was the dominant theme in game two of the day.
Ben Shepard would tow the slab for the Bulldogs in game two. The UMD starter would pitch seven and two thirds innings surrendering seven hits and striking out five, and only surrendering two runs. The Peacocks would get on the board in the top of the third inning courtesy of an RBI single as they grabbed a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs would get offensive opportunities in the first and second innings but would fail to score as they left two runners on base in the first inning and one in the second inning. This trend continued as UMD would leave the bases loaded in the 5
th inning failing to push a run across. Upper Iowa would take advantage of this as they would add the eventual game winning run on another RBI single. In the bottom of the eighth the Bulldogs would push across their first and only run of the contest thanks to an
Anders Brown RBI single that scored
Austin Gordon who was pinch running for
Brandt Kolpack. This brought the score to 2-1 and that is the how the game would finish. Shepard would be credited with the loss bringing his record to 1-3 on the season. Blake Thiesse would go the distance for the Peacocks chucking a complete game, he is credited with the win, his first of the season.
