Today, the University of Minnesota Duluth again battled with the Peacocks of Upper Iowa University at Wade Stadium in Duluth, MN. The Bulldogs would split the day defeating UIU in game one by a score of 10-2 picking up an NSIC victory and falling 14-3 in a non-conference seven-inning finale.
Â
In game one,
Russ Tanner towed the slab for the Bulldogs; Tanner was excellent for UMD as he threw seven innings, surrendered only four hits, and one earned run while striking out six Upper Iowa players. The only runs the Peacocks would generate would be courtesy of an unearned run that would cross on 6-3 putout in the first and a RBI double in the fourth inning. Through the first four innings of play, the Bulldogs would only be able to muster one hit, but all of that would change in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Bulldogs would plate six runs in the bottom of the fifth, a
Tim Pokornowski triple would start out the inning, he was then brought home by an
Anders Brown RBI single.
Trevor Gustafson would then subsequently bring home Brown after he advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. A
Brandt Kolpack 2RBI single and a
Brodie Paulson 2RBI double would finish the scoring for the Bulldogs in the fifth setting a new score of 6-2. UMD would add two insurance tallies in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring via a wild pitch, another
Anders Brown RBI single, and a
Trevor Gustafson ground out.
Paul Petit would come on in relief of Tanner in the top of the eighth to close things out. Petit worked two innings giving up one hit and surrendering two walks while striking out two.
Â
In game two, the offensive output saw in game one was unable to be recreated. The Peacocks again jumped out to an early lead via an unearned run that would cross the plate in the first inning. The Bulldogs would respond, as
Hayden Brown's RBI double would plate one run to tie things at one in the bottom of the second inning. Upper Iowa would take the lead for good in the top of the third inning as they plated five runs in the inning to take a 6-1 lead.
Dayo Lawal would record a ground rule double to left field in the bottom of the fourth scoring
Alex Wattermann and
Jack Puder to bring the game within three runs at that point, but that would be as close as the Bulldogs would get to bringing things level. The Peacocks would score two in the fifth, one in the sixth, and four in the seventh to bring us to our final score of 14-3.
Â
On deck for the Bulldogs are the Augustana Vikings. UMD will welcome Augustana to Wade Stadium this coming Wednesday April 7 for a mid-week NSIC double-header. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 in game one and 3:30 in game two.Â
