BULLDOGS GET A GOAL, BUT CAN’T GET PAST UNDEFEATED UPPER IOWA

The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team ultimately fell to Upper Iowa tonight, despite maintaining a one-goal lead for 39 minutes in the middle portion of a game that started with soggy conditions before drying out in the second half.

Lauren Singstock scored the Bulldogs' only goal of the afternoon. Her first collegiate goal, Singstock was able to capitalize off a mistake from the Peacocks after their goalkeeper spilled the ball straight onto her waiting foot. The goal broke Upper Iowa's home shutout streak; the team had not conceded a goal in conference play yet this season.

It would be a tale of two halves in today's game. "We played our best half of soccer of the year in the first half, and that says a lot because we've played some good halves," said Head Coach Greg Cane after the loss. The team finished the first 45 minutes of play with five shots -- three on goal and one in the back of the net -- to Upper Iowa's three. The team looked the dominant team in the first half despite slow play due to the rainy conditions. Victoria Thorson had a slicing header in the 41st minute to nearly double the Bulldogs' lead, but at the last second the Upper Iowa goalkeeper was able to make a jumping save.

The Peacocks were able to score twice in the second half, getting the equalizer in the 62nd minute and the go-ahead goal just four minutes later. Both goals were scored off of corner kicks; the Bulldogs' only conceded goals have been off set pieces this season. Said Coach Cane: "In the second half, we didn't respond to the changes from the opponent as well as we needed to. We gave up some end lines and corners and that's the story of the game." Despite heavy pressure from the Bulldogs in the closing minutes of the game, Upper Iowa was able to maintain their lead and remain undefeated so far this season. The Bulldogs now drop to 0-6.

Holly Kaboord and Victoria Thorson led the team with two shots each this afternoon; Anna Tobias, Lauren Singstock, Sarah Stange, and Baamlak Haugen all added one for a total of eight shots in the game. Upper Iowa would end with 11 shots after making eight in the second half. Eliana Marciano stepped up in a big way during the game, playing 77 total minutes and providing a necessary presence on the back line. Goalkeeper Sophia Grenz faced 11 total shots and made six saves.

The Bulldogs will look to pick up three points when they head to Winona State on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00pm in Winona.
