EARLY GOALS PROVE TOO MUCH FOR BULLDOGS TO OVERCOME IN LOSS TO WINONA STATE

The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team fell to Winona State 3-0 this afternoon to wrap up the team's first conference road trip of the 2021 season.

The Bulldogs conceded early, with the Warriors' first goal coming at the 3:57 mark. Winona State was able to double their lead in the 11th minute, a breakaway that eluded a UMD defender. Sophia Grenz came out of the net to defend, but the Warriors were able to slip the ball in behind her. They would sneak in a third goal at the 30:13 mark to make it a 3-0 game, which would end up to be the final scoreline.

The Bulldogs lead all game in shots, with 17 chances compared to Winona's 15. 11 of those game in the first half for UMD. The Bulldogs had 11 shots on goal during the game. Anna Tobias and Erin Walpole led UMD with three shots each. Tobias has made an immediate impact with the Bulldogs; the freshman forward has played in all seven games so far this season and has started the last three.

Also tallying at least one shot for the Bulldogs today were Lauren Singstock, Nora Griffin-Wiesner, Sarah Stange, Rachel Boelke, Holly Kaboord, and Mandy Conkel.

In the goalkeeper position, Sophia Grenz was subbed out at halftime for Jennifer Norris, who saw her first game action of the season. Norris made five saves in the second half.

"Obviously giving up an early goal was very deflating to a very good mental attitude going in," said Head Coach Greg Cane after the loss. "It was uphill the rest of the day, and giving up a second one is always difficult in the first half, but a third is unacceptable--it's very difficult to come back from that." The Bulldogs have not won against Winona since 2016.

The Bulldogs will look forward to some home field advantage in their next game, a matchup against Sioux Falls on Friday, October 1st at Malosky Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:00pm. To see the full season schedule, click here.
