There were no upsets in the Olympic women's hockey first two quarterfinals Friday, as Canada defeated Sweden 11-0 and the United States held off the Czech Republic 4-1.
Â
In the first game at Wukesong Sports Centre, the Czech Republic and Katerina Mrazova kept the game close – 1-1 – until the third period. Maddie Rooney was dressed but didn't play for the U.S., who scored an empty net goal late in the fourth to ice their victory and advance to the next round.
Â
In the second game, Ashton Bell faced off against Emma Soderberg instead of her typical presence in front of her as a Bulldog. Canada was simply too much for the Swedes, who along with Soderberg have former UMD forward Michelle Lowenhielm up front. Both Bell and UMD All-American Jocelyne Larcoque had assists for Canada. Larocque's second assist of the tournament came at 3:16 of the second period, a secondary helper that gave the Canadians a 5-0 lead. Bell followed at 29:09, the primary assist that gave Canada a 9-0 lead. Soderberg played the first two periods and made 30 saves on 39 shots.
Â
Bell is tied for seventh in assists over the tournament with four. The Bulldog All-American has five points in five games in her first-ever Olympic games (1g, 4a).
Â
Soderberg finishes her first Olympic games as one of the tournament's most impactful players and a breakout star for Sweden. The Jarved, Sweden native had an Olympic-high 167 total saves and a .912 saves percentage. Soderberg helped Sweden rally from two early losses to two-straight wins which clinched a quarterfinal berth for the Swedes.
Â
Two former Bulldogs will square off tonight to see which of their squads advance to the semifinals – Lara Stalder will lead Switzerland against Alexandra Vafina and the Russian Olympic Committee.
