The 2022 Olympic women's hockey quarterfinal field is set, and two of the University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey current players, along with six former players, will be right in the push for a medal mix.
Bulldog fans will have to wait to see senior goaltender Emma Soderberg in a UMD sweater after Sweden, along with Michelle Lowenhielm, defeated Denmark 3-1 to win its second-straight game. The win locks in a quarterfinal date with Soderberg's Bulldog teammate Ashton Bell and Canada (along with former UMD defensiveman Jocelyne Larocque), who helped knock off the United States and current Bulldog goaltender coach Maddie Rooney to win Group A 4-2 Tuesday.
Soderberg has been impossibly good in Beijing, and made 25 saves on 26 Denmark shots. The Jarved, Sweden native has made 137 stops on 144 shots in the Olympics, and has a .951 saves percentage and 1.77 GAA. Bell is tied for 10th among all players in assists with three helpers, and also has a total of four points with a goal.
While Sweden and Canada will meet on Feb. 11 in the Wukesong Sports Centre, former UMD forward Katerina Mrazova and the Czech Republic will face the United States earlier on Feb. 11 after falling to Japan 3-2 in a shootout.
Lara Stalder and Switzerland will face the Russia Olympic Committee and Alexandra Vafina at Wukesong on Feb. 12. Stalder ranks seventh among all goal scorers in the tournament with three goals in four games and also has an assist for 1.00 points per game average so far. Vafina is also tied for 10th in assists with three assists in four skates.
"It feels really good," said Soderberg after Sweden's win. "You always aim to reach the playoffs in any tournament and now we're there. But we're not satisfied yet. We've got more to give."
