UMD Bulldogs "ALLETE" Moments: Competition
Throughout this year, UMD Athletics is partnering with Minnesota Power, ALLETE to highlight the Bulldogs accomplishments in the 3 C's: Classroom, Competition, Community.
University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey defenseman
Nina Jobst-Smith was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's Defender of the Month for January Tuesday after leading all blueliners in scoring with a 1.13 points per game average.
The junior out of North Vancouver, B.C. is in the midst of a career-best offensive season, and Jobst-Smith tied for the most points in the WCHA with nine on a goal and eight assists over eight games last month. More importantly, Jobst-Smith was part of a defensive core that helped UMD hold teams to a league-low 1.25 points a game and posted a league-best three shutouts. With a career-high 22 points so far this season, Jobst-Smith has scored four goals and added 18 assists in 28 skates.
While this is Jobst-Smith's first WCHA Player of the Month honor, the defenseman has picked up two previous weekly awards on Jan. 9 and Dec. 5 of this season. It also marks the second-consecutive month the Bulldogs have owned the Defender of the Month (
Ashton Bell was named the honor for December), and the third out of a possible five months a UMD blueliner has held the title (Bell also was named it for September).
Jobst-Smith and the Bulldogs will head to Mankato, Minn. this weekend to face Minnesota State University, Mankato in a Friday-Saturday series. Friday's game will get underway at 3:00 p.m., while the series will conclude Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
