The University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team played their first game in an away series versus St. Cloud State University, a tight match that closed 2-1 in the Huskies favor. An opening goal by SCSU halfway through the game gave them the lead. Despite UMD tying the score, they ultimately couldn't pull ahead.
Â
The first period was quiet, with two successful penalty kills for the Bulldogs. They were getting outshot, although neither team had any serious looks.Â
Â
It wasn't until the second period that UMD got their first power play. They sent two shots on goal, but couldn't find their usual power play dominance. It took another Bulldog penalty kill, a shorthanded rush by freshman Anthony Menghini, and finally the return of even-strength play to break the game's scoring drought. The Huskies tallied a goal just under 38 minutes into the game, with a cross-ice pass from the point to an open skater netfront.Â
Â
Towards the very end of the period, SCSU went back on the power play. Carter Loney made UMD's second shorthanded push of the night, but shot wide. Shots were near even in the second period, but the Huskies were still on top in both categories on the scoreboard.Â
Â
Two and a half minutes into the final third of the game, a hit by SCSU behind the net led the Bulldogs coaches to challenge for contact to the head. After some deliberation by the officials, the challenge was confirmed and a 5-minute major was assessed to the Huskies.Â
Â
During the power play, SCSU had their own opportunity to skate in shorthanded, only to be stopped by a sliding Cole Spicer. Back at the other end of the ice, UMD held possession, waiting for the perfect moment.Â
Â
With 56 seconds left on the power play, freshman Matthew Perkins accepted a cross-zone pass and walked the puck in from the faceoff dot. With his second collegiate goal, Perkins tied the game halfway through the third period.Â
Â
The Bulldogs killed another penalty, their fifth of the night. A little under two minutes after the penalty ran out, however, the Huskies regained the lead thanks to a lunging cross-crease pass.Â
Â
SCSU was called for interference with a minute and half left in regulation, but even with the goaltender pulled, the Bulldogs were unable to take the game to overtime. In the end, shots on goal were 27-19 in favor of the Huskies. All but one of UMD's losses this season have come from games in which they've been outshot.
Â
The team's focus now shifts to tomorrow's rematch. The Bulldogs return to Herb Brooks National Hockey Center Saturday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m.
