Box Score The University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs women's tennis team won their first conference match against the St. Cloud State Huskies in a close one, ending 5-2, at the Duluth Indoor Sports Center. After their win against the Huskies, UMD improves to a 4-0 overall record and are now 1-0 in NSIC play.
The Bulldogs couldn't pull out the point in doubles but came with a victory in the No. 2 Doubles position (
Mallory Lithun and
Abby Johnson), with a close score of 7-5. Though this match didn't matter in the long run for the Bulldogs, it was the last doubles match to end. The doubles win gave the team a boost of momentum going into their singles matches.
The woman came out with the win against the Huskies, and their singles performances showed just how good this Bulldogs team will be this year. In the singles, UMD took five of the six matches. In the No.1 spot, Callaway went 6-4, 6-0, Muller (No. 2) finished 6-1, 7-5, Lithun (No. 4) went 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, Chaney (No. 5) went 6-2, 6-3, and in the No. 6 spot Honsey finished 7-5, 6-4. Â "It was fabulous to get our first conference victory and continue our undefeated run," said head coach
Jessica Worden. "I am so proud of how hard these Bulldogs have worked. Our season is going to be one for the record books."
This is the second-best start to the season the Bulldogs have had in the history of the program. Though women's tennis at UMD has only been around since 2010, this statistic shows that this season will be one to remember for the Bulldogs.
Worden also adds "
Shay Callaway,
Megan Muller,
Carly Chaney, and
Olivia Honsey remain undefeated throughout the season in singles. They are players that just get better and better as the match goes on."
These four have had an incredible start to the season and will continue to be dominant throughout the season. With Callaway's recent stellar performances to start the 2023 season in the No. 1 singles, she now has the second-best season-starting win streak for the Bulldogs, being just behind Kaite Bolf who set the record 11 years ago. In 2012, Bolf started her season with a seven game win streak at the No. 1 singles spot.Â
The Minnesota Duluth tennis team will be in Virginia, Minn. at Virginia Indoor Tennis and Pickleball for a duel against Gustavus Adolphus on Feb. 24. To see the full 2023 season schedule, click here.
