UMD TENNIS DOMINATES IN HOME DOUBLE HEADER

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The University of Minnesota Duluth women's tennis team had a home double header against Bemidji State and the College of St. Scholastica. At the end of the day UMD came out victorious against both opponents.

Vs. Bemidji St.
UMD got its third win of the season today, taking down the Bemidji State University Beavers 6-1 at the Duluth Indoor Sports Center.

The Bulldogs took two of three in doubles (one point), and five of six (five points) in their singles matches.

The singles matches were sparked by yet another Shay Callaway performance, beating her opponent 6-0 and 6-1. However, the match of the day came from a Megan Muller come-back win over her opponent which gave the ultimate defeat to the Beavers. Muller said "being able to come back when you're down is a difficult thing to do, but today I was able to get through that challenge and get the W." Muller's scores for her match were 4-6, 6-1, and then won her tiebreaker 10-4.

Abby Johnson was very proud of the performance that her team gave throughout the doubleheader. "We started off the day right taking that win against the Beavers, and then came out and took the second match, too," said Johnson. "I'm excited to see what the rest of the season holds."

"Although these were scrimmages, it still feels amazing that the whole team has kicked off our season with such high intensity and passion," said junior Callaway. "Truly an environment that is not only competitive, but caring."

Vs. St. Scholastica
The second match of the day was the only border battle of the year against St. Scholastica which ended in a big win for the Bulldogs. With a 7-0 win over the Saints, UMD went undefeated in this weekend's scrimmages.

Duluth won their doubles point today with a win from Callaway and Muller (6-2) and Johnson and Mallory Lithun (6-3).

"I am so proud of everyone today, each and every one of us battled and gave it our all," said Lithun. "These girls make me smile every day, and I am so happy to be a part of this team."

The Dogs then came out to incredible singles performances from every Bulldog that played, with the final score for singles being 7-0. Johnson (No. 3 singles) came back from a 4-6 first-set defeat to beat her opponent 6-0 in the second. She then came out and dominated the tiebreaker 10-3, winning the match.

"Today in both matches we were prepared to come out strong right away in our double matches and it proved ourselves well," said Laura Palmer. "It was fun playing a home match and looking forward to what the rest of the season holds."

"This is a really special team," said Amanda Hanowski. "This week was just the beginning and I can't wait to see what we can do going forward."
