UMD Signs Head Football Coach Curt Wiese To Contract Extension

The University of Minnesota Duluth and head football coach Curt Wiese have agreed to a contract extension that will keep him on the Bulldog sidelines through the 2028-29 season.

"Curt is an exceptional coach and an incredible person," said UMD director of athletics Forrest Karr. "He mentors other coaches and cares about the well-being of athletes throughout our department. Alums, parents, fans, athletes and colleagues regularly tell me about Curt's positive influence and the many ways that he has earned their trust. We are excited about the continued excellence of Bulldog football under Curt's guidance."

Wiese has been at the helm of the Bulldogs for 13 completed seasons, and over that time, has earned a 97-23 record at UMD and just last season hit the 100 win mark for his career (which now rests at 106). With Wiese in the program, the Bulldogs have won seven Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) North Division titles and made four NCAA Division II playoff appearances. The Bulldogs have also won two overall NSIC championships and had two perfect 11-0 regular seasons under Wiese, who also owns a dominant .808 winning percentage.

"I am excited to enter my 17th season at UMD and 13th as head football coach," said Wiese. "I have been surrounded by many great players, staff and assistant coaches in my time at UMD, which has allowed us to have success both on and off the field. I appreciate the support from our administrative team, and I look forward to continuing to help lead our football program alongside an outstanding staff and group of young men."

Wiese also helped produce 32 All-Americans and 73 All-NSIC First Team selections while his Bulldogs have earned NSIC All-Academic status 148 times. Among those are 12 College Sports Communicators (CoSIDA) Academic All-Americans including three in the 2024 season. Wiese's Academic All-Americans have been wide receiver Jason Balts (First Team, 2017), two-time honoree defensive lineman Ethan Beffert (Second Team, 2024 and 2023), three-time honoree offensive lineman Arik Johnson (First Team in 2024, 2023 and 2022) defensive end Dan Monson (Second Team, 2019), offensive lineman Andrew Pattock (First Team, 2013), two-time honoree tight end Sam Pitz (First Team, 2024 and 2023) and defensive end Nick Thorpe (First Team, 2017). Johnson was also recently awarded the prestigious 2024 Britton Scholar-Athlete Award for Academic for the NSIC's top male student-athlete.
