Box Score The No. 10 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team earned its first 100th win over another NCAA Division I women's college hockey program Saturday afternoon inside AMSOIL Arena with a 5-0 shutout against Bemidji State University.
Behind two goals and an assist from rookie forward Madi Burr and a goal and an assist from Caitlin Kraemer, the Bulldogs also earned their 15th win of the season and their 21st consecutive triumph over BSU and clinched home Western Collegiate Hockey Association ice for the first round of the conference postseason.
"I'm really proud of our team," said UMD heads coach Laura Schuler. "Yesterday we faced a ton of adversity and I think we talked about the importance of being connected and supporting one another, not just on the ice, but on the bench, and I really felt that and I thought it rolled over into today's game as well. I'm really happy with how we started, I thought we started much better today compared to yesterday. And then I thought our second period was obviously outstanding. We really took control of the game in the second period. Bemidji pushed back real hard there in the third and Eve was spectacular, earning another shutout for us, so really, really happy with her play today. Sometimes that's tough when, you know, in the second period, I think shots were 19-4 for us and she wasn't getting a lot of action. Then she got a ton of it in the third and she was there for us, you know, what a pro."
Kraemer picked up Saturday where she was forced to leave off Friday, and buried her second goal of the series off a long airborne pass from Mary Kate O'Brien that the sophomore forward threaded through the five-hole of Beaver netminder Ava Hills for her 13th goal of the season at 13:06 of the first.
A mere 14 seconds into the second period, Kraemer again winded up on the scoresheet. Despite being on the penalty kill, Kraemer chased down a puck from Tova Henderson behind the BSU net and fed a wide open Danielle Burgen in the slot for the 2-0 lead. Burgen's goal was the fifth of the senior for the senior forward.
1:22 later, it was Burr's turn. The rookie forward backhanded in a Rae Mayer rebound to give UMD a 3-0 advantage, and then struck again on the power play at the 8:56 mark. Burr then converted on the power play after she stuffed an attempted BSU clear into the twine, and not even nine minutes into the middle of the second period, UMD was already up a 4-0 lon BSU.
Burr's final offensive contribution in the scorebook came at 13:56 of the third period. After driving into the offensive zone and to net, Burr slid the puck over to Kate Kosobud, who swiped in her second goal as a Bulldog and third point on the weekend as a blueliner.
Eve Gascon's 26 saves turned into her seventh shutout of the season – the second time the junior has posted seven shutouts in a season. Gascon also hit her 18th career shutout to take over sole possession of UMD's third slot among career shutouts in program history. Gascon's Bulldogs outshot BSU 33-26, including 19-4 in the second period, though the Beavers did put 13 shots on goal to UMD's six in the third. The Bulldogs went 1-of-5 on their power play while holding the Beavers scoreless in three attempts. UMD finishes up the regular season against BSU 4-0 and extended the Bulldogs extended their current winning streak against the Beavers to 21 games.
UMD (15-12-2, 11-10-3) will continue its current home stand next weekend when it hosts the University of St. Thomas next weekend at AMSOIL. The series will get underway at 6:02 p.m. Friday night.
