Senior goaltender Mira Muikku was selected as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 27-Nov. 2, the league office announced today.
Muikku (Helsinki, Finland) posted a 1-0-1 record last weekend. In Friday's 3-1 win over St. Cloud State University, she allowed her first goal in more than six games, ending a streak of five consecutive shut outs. Saturday, she made 13 saves in a 0-0 double-overtime tie with NCC Regular Season Champion Minnesota State University Mankato.
Muikku has recorded a 0.62 goals against average and has allowed only nine goals in 13 games including 10.5 shutouts.
This was Muikku's second NSIC Player of the Week award this season joining fellow teammates: Holly Eggebraaten, Leslie Stoen, and Nicole Fietz as the only Bulldog players to garner the award in 2003.
UMD is 11-3-3 overall and 8-0 in the NSIC. The Bulldogs will host Concordia University-St. Paul tomorrow (Nov. 4) in the first round of the NSIC Tournament at 1:00 p.m. The winner will play the winner of the Wayne State College/Northern State University game Friday at 4:00 p.m. at the University of Minnesota's Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in semifinal action. The third place and championship games will be played on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. respectively. at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
