STINOGEL AND SHAVER GARNER ALL-NSIC SECOND TEAM ACCOLADES

One of the strengths of the University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team during its late run to the NSIC Tournament field has been its pitching. In their final seasons competing for the Bulldogs, a pair of these hurlers have been bestowed with honors from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference for their dominance on the hill.

Collin Stinogel and Mark Shaver have been named to the All-NSIC Second Team it was announced by the league office today (May 8). Stinogel was one of four starters named to the second team while Shaver was the lone second team reliever to be honored by the conference.

Stinogel, a 6-2 right-hander, was the primary pitching option for the Bulldogs in 2012. The senior parlayed his 12 starts into a 4-3 record with a 2.84 ERA that ranks tenth best in the 13-team league.

The St. Cloud, Minn., native allowed the opposition to bat just .197 – a mark that was third best in the conference in 2012. He gave up just 47 hits in his time on the hill, which were the fifth fewest in the NSIC pitching circle. Stinogel fired five complete seven-inning games during the 2012 regular season campaign and worked a total of 66.2 innings in his farewell collegiate campaign.

Assigned to the role of a reliever early on in the season, Shaver has made his last four appearances in the role of starter for the Bulldogs. Owning a team-best 1.44 ERA, the senior out of Roberts, Wis., has struck out 24 batters in his last three games – including a single-season high 11 against the University of Mary on May 5.

The right-hander enjoyed perhaps his most effective outing on April 28 in Sioux Falls when he fired 5.2 innings of perfect baseball before allowing a hit to Augustana in a 3-1 UMD victory. Shaver owns a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 35-to-four in 2012.

The Bulldogs are the sixth seed in the NSIC Tournament and will face off against the number one seed, No. 5-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks in a first round game on Wednesday (May 9) in Mankato. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
