The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team will put the wraps on the 2013 portion of the season this weekend when they head to St. Cloud, Minn. to face St. Cloud State University at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The Western Collegiate Hockey Association action is set for 3:07 p.m.both Friday and Saturday.
THE SERIES:  The Bulldogs are 48-10-4 all-time against SCSU after the Huskies handed UMD a 1-4 loss back on Nov. 1 at AMSOIL and then a 1-1 tie on Nov. 2. The Bulldogs outshot SCSU 93-41, but was outscored 5-2 in the series.Â
UMD surrendered a 13-game winning streak on Nov. 1, despite putting 53 shots on net in the 4-1 loss, including a program-high of 31 in the third period..  Lara Stalder had the lone UMD goal in the third period and three players had six or more shots in the contest (Jamie Kenyon and Zoe Hickel with seven, Sidney Morin with six).
Jenna McParland had UMD's lone goal on Nov. 2, a power-play tally in the second period, as well as the second goal in the shootout. In the series, the Bulldogs were without junior defenseman Tea Villila both games due to Team Finland commitments and of course, senior center Brienna Gillanders who is out indefinitely due to injury. UMD played with five defenseman on Nov. 2 and just three complete lines.
FULL UMD NOTES VS ST. CLOUD STATE
LAST TIME OUT: UMD was swept last weekend by No. 9 Boston University in Boston by scores of 6-5 and 4-2. The Bulldogs scored five goals Friday but did not win for the first time since Feb. 29, 2004 (a 7-5 loss against Minnesota). Trailing 3-2 heading into the third period, the Bulldogs deficit mounted to 5-2 after BU scored two goals in the opening two minutes. But UMD rallied, netting two power-play goals over a four minute span. The Terriers poked in the game-winner in between UMD's offensive rush between the 9:09 mark and 13:55. Despite outshooting BU 16-7 in the final stanza and 40-26 in the game, the Bulldogs could not notch the game-tying goal.
Saturday UMD again had to chase BU from behind, surrendering three goals in the first two periods despite outshelling the Terriers 17-14. BU made it 4-0 7:18 into the third period but goals by Meghan Huertas at 7:31 and a snipe from Tea Villila at 9:22 finally made it game. Again UMD outshot BU 14-7 in the third stanza and 35-21 in the game, but again could not find the twine. Rookie blueliner Lara Stalder led all UMD players with three assists in the game.
NOTES FROM THE BU SERIES: UMD is now 2-2-0 against BU all-time, having played the Terriers in th past two Decembers. The Bulldogs are also 19-5-2 against Hockey East opponents all-time.
--UMD, which is 1-4-1 in its last six games, has outshot its opponents 137-100 in its last four losses -- three of which came against top-10 teams. The Bulldogs outshot BU 75-47 last weekend.
--While UMD may be 0-6-3 against ranked teams so far this season, four of those losses were by just a single goal. The Bulldogs are also averaging 2.37 goals against teams ranked in the top-10.
OH SHOOT: The Bulldogs are 4-4-1 so far this season when they have outshot their opponents. When UMD outshots their foes, it has been by a big margin, with the Bulldogs averaging 44 shots to just 21. Six times UMD has put 40 or more shots on net but in those games were just 2-2-1. The Bulldogs have also held those same opponents to under 18 shots three times, going 2-1 in those games.
Last weekend was the first timet this season that UMD outshot its opponent over the entire series but came up without as much as a tie.
TOP DOGS: Junior winger Jenna McParland continues to lead UMD with 19 points on eight goals and 11 helpers through 18 skates. McParland has contributed at least a point in 11 of those games, including nine points (four goals, five assists) in eight games against top-10 teams.
Both senior Jamie Kenyon and rookie defenseman Lara Stalder have 17 points apiece for the Bulldogs. Kenyon has seven goals and 10 assists and Stalder four goals and 13 assists. Stalder's 13 assists is a team-high for UMD. Stalder ranks fifth in the NCAA in both points per game as a defenseman and among all rookies with a 0.94 average.
Two of UMD's top-five scorers are freshman -- Stalder and center Ashleigh Brykaliuk, who rounds out the top-five with 13 points on five goals and eight assists.
BULLDOGS NOTES:Â Junior defenseman Tea Villila leads UMD with a plus/minus rating of +8, more than twice the rating of the next highest Bulldog...UMD is still unbeate when it scores the first goal at 5-0-2...When the Bulldogs don't score first, their odds have drastically decreased of winning, with a record of 2-8-1...UMD has allowed 18 of its 42 goals against in the third period...Jamie Kenyon still has the second most power-play goals in the NCAA with four...The Bulldogs own the fifth highest penalty minutes averaged per game with 12.9...UMD also has the seventh-best penalty kill in the nation, with a 89.5 success rate on 68-of-76 penalties killed.
