Box Score The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team returned to Malosky Stadium Saturday afternoon and earned a key 2-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Upper Iowa University.
UMD, now 3-1 on the year (2-0 NSIC), continued a trend this season in coming out strong in the first half, registering eight shots in the opening period, with the most important coming with just seconds remaining as junior forward
Maureen Stormont slipped a shot in traffic past the Peacocks' keeper to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 at the break. Fittingly, it was UMD's most prolific current goal-scorer for Stormont to score just before coach
Greg Cane and the Bulldogs honored their all-time greatest goal scorer during a special halftime ceremony. Jenny (Warrick) Reierson became the first member of the women's soccer team to be selected to the UMD Athletic Hall of Fame last night. Stormont is now sixth all-time at UMD with 24 career goals, while Reierson stands alone at the top with 52 for her career.
The Bulldogs continued to pressure Upper Iowa after the break, hitting a pair of crossbars in the frame. In the 69th minute, junior defender
Riley Allen fed a pass back to junior midfielder
Kelli Klun, who drilled a shot from 35 yards out into the far corner of the net to put UMD up by two. From there, it was sophomore goalkeeper
Marissa Rosa and a stout Bulldog defense that held Upper Iowa off the board. Rosa would need just three saves to earn her first shutout of the 2013 campaign.
UMD finished with 14 shots in the match, holding Upper Iowa to 11. The Bulldogs registered six shots on net to the Peacocks' three. Stormont led the way with five shots for UMD as eight Bulldogs registered at least one in the match.
UMD returns to the pitch tomorrow afternoon for a showdown with Winona State University as the teams reignite one of the most storied rivalries in the history of the NSIC. That match is set to take place at 1:00 p.m.
