Box Score
The University of Minnesota Duluth rallied in the second half to defeat the University of Sioux Falls 2-1 in Sioux Falls, S.D., Saturday afternoon and remain unbeaten in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference soccer play.
The Bulldogs (5-1, 4-0 NSIC) showed resilence, netting a pair of goals in the second half to come back from an early 1-0 deficit against the Cougars (0-7, 0-4 NSIC). USF's Maria Gonzalez broke away from the UMD defense in the 29th minute to score her first goal of the season. The Cougars' defense held tough on seven shots from the Bulldogs' offense in the first frame.
Just six minutes into the second frame, freshman
Marissa Ganske finally got the Bulldogs on the board with her first goal of her career, an unassisted tally which knotted the score at one apiece. Not surprisingly to anyone following UMD this season, it would be
Maureen Stormont hooking up with
Dani Potter for her third game-winning goal of the season in the 67th minute as the Bulldogs held on to the 2-1 lead for the final 20 minutes.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Marissa Rosa finished with two saves in the game to preserve the victory. Her counterpart Corrin Cook stopped six of eight shots on net to keep her team in it. UMD finished with 18 shots in the game while its defense held the Cougars to just four in the match.
The Bulldogs continue on the road tomorrow as they take on No. 18 Southwest Minnesota State in another NSIC match-up that should be a tough test for both teams as UMD and the Mustangs each enter the play ranked in the NCAA Central region. That match is set for a 1:00 p.m. opening kick.
