The University of Minnesota Duluth made its first - and final -- home appearance of 2014 Friday night and was defeated 9-0 by the College of St. Scholastica at the Arrowhead Tennis Center. It marked the season opener for both of the two intra-city rivals.
"It was a tough night and it seemed everyone got off to a slow start," said second-year UMD head coach
Bob Skenzich. "But I was proud of the way we battled back."
The match marked the collegiate debuts for three Bulldog freshmen --
Drew DeCorsey,
Kaitlin Wohnoutka and
Briana Rademacher, who lost in three sets at No. 6 singles -- and the first-ever No. 1 singles assignment for junior
Kara Saemann. Saemann also teammed with DeCorsey at No. 1 doubles.
The Bulldogs will be in Fargo, N.D., next Saturday (Feb. 8) for Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference engagements against Minnesota State University-Moorhead and the University of Minnesota Crookston before taking on the University of Mary in Fargo, N.D. the following morning.
