POWER-PLAY GOALS CRIPPLE BULLDOGS AGAINST NO. 1 MINNESOTA

Box Score The good news for the Bulldogs is that they held the nation's top-scoring team to just two even-strength goals.  The bad news is that they also gave the nation's best power-play nine attempts with an extra skater.

The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team fell 6-0 Saturday afternoon to the top-ranked University of Minnesota at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.  The Bulldog loss gives the Gophers the regular season sweep between the two teams for just the second time in UMD's program history and second year in a row.

After giving up just one goal midway through the first period, the Bulldogs were crippled by 13 minutes of penalities -- including a  boarding/game misconduct against junior forward Meghan Huertas -- in the second stanza.  The result was three power-play tallies by Minnesota that cracked the game wide open and left UMD in a 4-0 deficit at the second intermission.

Sophomore goaltender Kayla Black faced 27 shots, turning away 22, while Karissa Grapp made seven stops on eight attempts.  UMD was 0-of-5 on the power-play and penalized nine times for 29 minutes.  Minnesota went 4-of-9 with the extra skater and was called for seven infractions for 25 minutes.

The Bulldogs will get newly minted Olympic bronze medalist and rookie blueliner Lara Stalder back Monday, and will get an equally clean postseason slate next weekend when they host Ohio State University in the first round of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs.  For a third time in three years, the Buckeyes will travel to AMSOIL Arena, and the Bulldogs continue the  program expectation of first round home playoff series.  The Friday to possible Sunday series will get underaway Friday, with a 6:07 p.m. start.
