University of Minnesota Duluth senior Max Ryan tossed a seven-inning complete game in his first career pitching start as the Bulldogs earned a split Saturday against Wayne State (Mich.) University, winning 7-4 in game one and falling 5-4 in game two at South Florida State College in Avon Park, Fla. at the RussMatt Central Florida Invite.

Ryan (1-0) settled down after allowing a hree runs including a home run in the opening inning to finish with just seven hits and four runs allowed, striking out four and walking just one for UMD (1-4). Down 3-0 in the bottom of the first, the Bulldogs answered right back against Wayne (11-4) quickly when freshman outfielder Matt Vogt lifted a grand slam for his first career home run, which along with a Bo Hellquist RBI single, put UMD up 5-3.

Designated hitter Hellquist (So.) and catcher Beau Goff (Jr.) added a pair of doubles in the the third to put the Bulldogs up 6-3, and UMD strung together three singles for a Kellen McCoshen (Sr./OF) RBI in the sixth for insurance. Goff finished the game 3-for-3 while Hellquist added a pair of hits of his own on the afternoon.

The offense continued for the Bulldogs out of the gate in game two when sophomore shortstop Kyle Comer blasted a lead-off home run to left field and UMD took an early 2-0 lead. The Warriors showed their ability to hit the longball in the second and pulled within one. Walks and hit batters came back to bite Kyle Fritz (0-1) as Wayne pulled ahead in the fourth inning 5-2. Fritz allowed just three hits but gave up four free passes and struck out just one in his 3.1 innings of work. The Bulldog 'pen held WSU quiet the rest of the way while UMD scored single runs in the fifth and seventh innings, but could not cross the plate a fifth time as Wayne's closer Clayton Ruch shut the door with 1.2 innings of work in his eight save this season.

The Bulldogs begin a four-game series with Saint Michael's (Vt.) College with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon set for 12:30 p.m. CT in Winter Haven, Fla. The Purple Knights (0-0) will start their season against UMD.
