It took longer than the Bulldogs may have preferred, but the University of Minnesota Duluth scraped together a pair of runs in the top of the 13th inning to edge out Concorda University, St. Paul 6-4 in Mauston, Wis. in game one of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Bears would come back to win game two, 10-2, to send UMD home with a split.

Senior righthander Max Ryan breezed through his first six innings for the Bulldogs (5-13, 1-7 NSIC), allowing just two hits before the Golden Bears rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and send the teams to extra innings. The UMD bullpen picked Ryan up with 6.2 shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out four. Kyle Fritz (1-1) pitched the final two innings, allowing just one baserunner to pick up his first win of the season.

A pair of walks, a hit-by-pitch, a sacrifice bunt, and just a lone single by senior centerfielder Kellen McCoshen came together to score a pair of runs for UMD in the 13th inning. Sophomore third baseman Jimmy Heck drove in a run on a fielder's choice and freshman second baseman Skyler Wenninger drew a bases loaded walk to collect the other RBI for UMD.

Concordia (11-6, 3-4 NSIC) scored early and often in game two, plating multiple runs in the first, fourth, and fifth innings as they downed the Bulldogs 10-2 in the nightcap. CU starter Yuji Suzuki tossed a complete game, scattering five hits while striking out four Bulldogs on the night for his first victory of the season. Five Golden Bears finished with multiple hits in the game.

Down 3-0 in the top of the third, UMD got on the board when sophomore shortstop Kyle Comer was hit by a pitch, and sophomore first baseman Alex Wojciechowski launched his first home run of 2014 to left-centerfield. Unfortunately, it would be as close as the Bulldogs would come on the day as Concordia finished with 15 hits against four UMD pitchers, handing sophomore Charlie Conkel his first defeat of the season. Wojciechowski finished the day 4-for-8 with the long ball, while sophomore third baseman Jimmy Heck saw his bat come alive with a 3-for-7 day with a pair of runs batted in and a double.

With more snow in the forecast, UMD's weekend home games with Southwest Minnesota State will be moved to another location. Further details will be released in the coming days.
