2014 NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll

The University of Minnesota Duluth earned six first-place votes but landed second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches Poll as senior forward Maureen Stormont was selected as the league's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

While UMD topped the NSIC teams represented in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) NCAA II National Poll at the No. 8 position, defending NSIC Champion No. 15 Minnesota State University Mankato edged them for the top spot with 214 points and seven first-place votes to the Bulldogs' 206 and six. Winona State University finished a close third with 204 points and two first place votes, while Southwest Minnesota State University took home the last top pick in fourth place. Those four teams all earned bids to the NCAA II Postseason Tournament in 2013, with the Bulldogs knocking off both Winona State and Southwest Minnesota en route to the Elite Eight.

Before earning the league's preseason offensive honors in 2014, Stormont was an All-NSIC First Team selection last season along with being an NSCAA All-Central Region First Team and Daktronics All-Region Second Team selection.  Stormont led the NSIC in scoring with a program-high 43 points and 18 goals.  She ranks fourth all-time in points (93) and third in goals (39) at UMD.  Last season, she scored six postseason goals, including both in the Bulldogs' 2-0 NCAA II Tournament win over Southwest Minnesota State.  She earned at least one point in all but seven games and was named NSCAA Scholar All-American, Capital One Academic All-Central Region, and to NSIC All-Academic Team in 2013.

Meanwhile, Minnesota State senior defender Bre Steel was named the NSIC's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year after an NSCAA First Team All-Region season in 2013.

The 2014 season opens on Friday, Sept. 5, and UMD will begin play at the University of Central Missouri Season Opener, taking on Southwest Baptist University in Warrensburg, Mo. with opening kick set for 4:00 p.m. The Bulldogs will also take on the host Jennies on Sunday, Sept. 7. Stay tuned for a full preview of UMD's season on this site next Monday.
