Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

UMD TAKES DOWN TOP-RANKED NORTH DAKOTA FRIDAY AND TAKES OVER NCHC LEAD

The University of Minnesota Duluth added another quality road win -- and another victory over a No. 1 ranked club -- to its 2014-15 portfolio Friday and it did so against a long-time rival that has given them plenty of fits in recent times.

The No. 7 Bulldogs closed out the night with three unanswered third-period goals and skated out of Ralph Engelstad Arena with a 4-1 triumph over No. 1 University of North Dakota. UMD, which has now won 10 of its last 12 games, improved to 13-6-0 overall (3-1-0 versus No. 1-ranked teams) and assumed sole possession of first place in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference at 8-3-0-0.

Sophomore Kyle Osterberg scored the game's first goal 6:49 into the second period on a shot from the low slot and the UMD clung to that lead until the 11:12 mark of the third when Connor Gardner got the equalizer for North Dakota (13-5-2; 6-4-1-0). It took UMD just 67 seconds to answer as junior center Tony Cameranesi, off a terrific feed from sophomore defenseman Willie Raskob, pumped in his fifth goal of the season. A little over a minute later, sophomore defenseman Carson Soucy beat North Dakota goaltender Zane McIntyre with a wrister from the left face off circle to put UMD up by two before sophomore left winger Alex Iafallo tacked on an empty net goal to seal the win, just the Bulldogs' fourth in their last 15 outings with North Dakota.

UMD not only outshot North Dakota 37-24 on the night (and 18-10 in the second period), but gave North Dakota just one power play opportunity.  Ten different skaters collected one point each for the Bulldogs, who went 0-of-3 with the man advantage. Kasimer Kaskisuo, the nation's rookie goaltender victory leader (12-4-0), finished with 23 saves in his 15 consecutive start.

The two teams will meet for a final time this regular season Saturday evening in Grand Forks, N.D.

Notes: The Bulldogs are 8-3-0 away from Duluth in 2014-15 ... Tony Cameranesi extended his personal scoring streak to a career-high six games while rookie right winger Karson Kuhlman, who assisted on Cameranesi's goal, now has collected at least one point in eight of the past nine outings ... UMD has outscored the opposition 28-12 in the third period this season ... Carson Soucy snapped a 10-game pointless drought with his third-period goal ... UMD is 7-0-0 this winter when senior right winger Justin Crandall has marked in the points column and 8-1-0 when junior center Cal Decowski has done so. Those two each picked up an assist Friday.
