Box Score The University of Minnesota Duluth gave No. 6 Minnesota State University everything it could handle throughout regulation but fell 1-0 on a score just over three minutes into overtime in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Friday afternoon in Mankato, Minnesota.
UMD (4-9-2, 3-7-2 NSIC) has made a habit of frustrating the top teams in the conference defensively, holding No. 6 Minnesota State (13-1-1, 11-0-1 NSIC) to just one shot-on-goal in the first half while the Bulldogs had three before the break in a scoreless game. Tied 4-4 in shots late in the half, the Mavericks let out a flurry of four in the final two minutes but none went on-target as they took an 8-4 lead to the break. Junior forward
Marissa Ganske, who netted her first goal of the season last weekend at the University of Mary, led the Bulldogs with a pair of shots in the opening frame.
Minnesota State continued to pile on UMD in the early going of the second half, quickly knotting it up at four SOG apiece while reaching 16 total shot attempts by the 70th minute. Still, freshman goalkeeper
Sisley Ng and the Bulldog defense stymied the Mavericks throughout the regulation period, taking the first place team in the NSIC to overtime. Minnesota State would finally break through in the third minute of the extra session with senior forward Jessica Bowe netting her second goal of the season with an assist from senior defender Emily Erickson. The shot was the sixth on-goal and no. 22 overall for Mankato. UMD finished with seven shots and four on-goal against MSU's senior 'keeper Lauren Hoeppner.
CORNER KICKSGanske would finish with three shots, two on goal, to lead the Bulldogs, with four other players adding one each ... Mankato's Dana Savino had a game-high eight shots on the afternoon including a pair on-net ... MSU now owns a 17-8-4 record all-time against UMD.
UP NEXTThe Bulldogs will make their penultimate road stop of the NSIC regular season as they travel to Concordia University, St. Paul on Sunday afternoon. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. in St. Paul.
