The University of Wisconsin-Parkside hit eight three-pointers while shooting 65.5 percent in the first half and held off the University of Minnesota Duluth the rest of the way as the Rangers knocked off the Bulldogs 99-81 in Somers, Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon.
UMD (3-2) put the wraps on its non-conference regular season slate with its fifth game in nine days against a perennial NCAA II Tournament contender with Wisconsin-Parkside (3-0) knocking off the Bulldogs. To its credit, UMD shot 48.4 percent in the first half, but the Bulldogs were just 3-of-10 from beyond the arc while the Rangers shot 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from range. UMD did not help its case, out-fouling UWP 11-8 before the break and sending Parkside to the line 14 times (for nine points), while going just 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in the opening tenty minutes.
The Bulldogs remained consistent after the break, shooting 42.9 percent (12-of-28) in the second half while hitting six threes of their own, but Parkside was hot as well, finished with 12 threes in the game while shooting 48.3 percent (14-of-29) in the second half. UMD did a better job of drawing fouls after the break with a 13-of-14 performance at the line but again did too much of it themselves, sending Parkside to the strip 16 more times for 12 points. The first-half differential would essentially prove the difference in the game as the second half was 44-43 in favor of the Rangrs.
UMD turned the ball over 15 times on the night, but forced nine by Parkside. The Bulldog bench was out-scored 38-19 on the night with many of the Bulldog reserves producing an 0-for. Senior guard
Pierre Newton led the way with 20 points for the Bulldogs while senior
Taylor Lavery continued his hot scoring with 16 points, including a 3-for-4 ight from range. Senior
Brendon Pineda and sophomore
Lane Olson also hit double figures scoring on the night. Sophomore guard
Kyle Schalow went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc and produced nine points off the bench for the Bulldogs.
Wisconsin-Parkside had six men in double figures and a double-double from first-year reserve forward Kyle Flanagan (13 points and 10 rebounds). Senior guard Andy Mazurczak had a game-high 22 points for the Rangers.
