The University of Minnesota Duluth took down a pair of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponents -- Fort Hayes State University (2-0) and the University of Nebraska-Kearney (13-1 in six innings) -- for its first two triumphs of the young 2015 season Friday at the UAM 8-State Classic in Bentonville, Ark.
In the 2-0 takedown of Fort Hayes State, UMD got the only scoring it would need in the top of the second inning when sophomore center fielder Haley Lundquist, with the bases empty, went deep for her second collegiate home run. The Bulldogs tacked on an insurance run in the fifth, receiving a clutch, two-out single from rookie shortstop
Becky Smith that brought in sophomoore left fielder
Heather Woyak. UMD junior hurler Cali Sadler (1-1) allowed five hits and struck out nine in the complete game victory.
Junior All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference third baseman
Sami Schnyder went 0-for-3, which put the clamps on her 14-game hitting streak which stretched back to April 12, 2014.
The Bulldogs (2-1), pounded out 15 hits against Nebraska-Kearney (0-2) with Schynder, rookie center fielder
Hannah Schmoll, junior catcher
Ashley Lewis and senior first baseman
Jordan Rice, each collecting two of those. The Bulldogs held a 3-1 lead before scoring four times in the top of the fifth inning (with three of those runs coming off of Rice's homer) and adding six more in the sixth. Schynder, junior right fielder
Ashley Schilling and freshman third baseman Alexia Klass all ripped doubles while sophomore Sam Hartman toed the rubber to pick up her first pitching win of the year after scattering six hits and fanning five.
UMD will look to double their winning streak tomorrow playing another pair of MIAA teams. First game versus Missouri Western is slated to begin at 1 p.m., then a quick turnaround against Ouachita Baptist is set for 3 p.m. Sunday's feature matchups against Southern Nazarene and Missouri Southern have been cancelled due to projected bad weather.
