Shortly after falling 8-1 to Minnesota State University-Moorhead in its 2015 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference debut Saturday morning, the University of Minnesota Duluth regrouped and bounced back to best the University of Mary 5-4 at Fitness Evolution Tennis Center in Sartell, Minn.
Shelby Benofske posted the Bulldogs' lone win against the Dragons, prevailing in straights sets (6-3 and 6-1) at No. 4 singles while fellow freshmen
Jillian Klasen lost in a tie-breaker at No. 6 singles (7-6, 5-7, 10-2). In the 5-4 triumph over the Marauders, the Bulldogs got off to a promising start by claiming all three doubles events -- seniors
Alyssa Brunelli and
Kara Saemann at No. 1, Benofske and sophomore
Drew DeCorsey at No. 2 and freshmen
Emma Bartels and
Katie Baasch at No. 3. Ensuing straight-set single singles victories by sophomore
Kaitlin Wohnoutka (No. 5) and Klasen (No. 6) sealed the deal for UMD, which improved to 1-4 on the year.
The Bulldogs will head to Virginia, Minn., to face Bemidji State University this Friday (Feb. 13) before returning to the Arrowhead Tennis Center in Duluth on Sunday to host the University of Minnesota Crookston in another NSIC match. The Bulldogs will then take on Gustavus Adolphus College later that day at the same facility.
