Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

UMD AND OMAHA FIT TO BE TIED SATURDAY, BUT SHOOTOUT DOES IN BULLDOGS AGAIN

Different night. Same result.

For the second time in as many games, the University of Minnesota Duluth and the University of Nebraska Omaha battled to a 1-1 overtime tie and for the second time in as many games, the Bulldogs were unable to seal the deal in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference shootout.

Just as it had done on Friday night, the visiting No. 8 Mavericks found themselves trailing in the third period, forced the overtime and then scored twice in the shootout. The No. 6 Bulldogs, who were held scoreless (0-for-2) in Friday's shootout, got one on Saturday from sophomore center Dominic Toninato -- on his first-ever collegiate attempt.

UMD (19-12-3 overall; 11-8-2-0 NCHC) took a 1-0 lead with 1:57 to go in the second period when senior right winger Justin Crandall, deflected in junior center Tony Cameranesi's shot near the top of the left faceoff circle for this 11th goal of the season That four-on-four goal stood up until Brian O'Rouke's shot from the right point beat UMD goaltender Kasimir Kaskisuo with 13:10 to go regulation. Kaskisuo, who has patrolled the goalcrease in every minute of UMD's 21 NCHC outings, finished with 28 saves and wound up turning aside 57 of 59 Maverick shots over the weekend.

"Any time a team comes into your building and takes points away from you, you're not going to be happy," said Crandall, who was one of four Bulldogs making their final regular season home appearance. "It was probably the tightest weekend of hockey I've played in my four years here."

A Senior Night crowd of 6,972 saw UMD close out its regular season home schedule by going unbeaten in 10 of its 12 games in Duluth (7-2-3). They also witnessed the first back-to-back 1-1 draws in the 71-year history of UMD hockey.

"We've got to keep taking positive away from games like this," said Crandall. "We have another big series ahead of us next week."

The Bulldogs will be at NCHC rival Western Michigan University next Friday and Saturday for their regular season finales.
