POWER PLAY GOALS DOOM NO. 6/7 BULLDOGS AGAINST NO. 3 WISCONSIN

Box Score The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team found out Saturday night how difficult it is to manage the nation's third best team while on the penalty kill.

The No. 3 University of Wisconsin used three power play goals in the first period, including two 5-on-3 advantages, to push past the No. 6/7 Bulldogs 5-0 at LaBahn Arena in Madison, Wisc.  In all, the Badgers first four scores of the game came on the power play which finished a sharp 4-of-8 for Wisconsin Saturday night.

"I am proud of my team tonight for playing hard and not quitting no matter the circumstances," said head coach Shannon Miller after the game.  "I appreciate Kayla Black stepping up to play even though she was sick.  It's obvious that their power play and goaltender beat us tonight and that was the difference and only difference.  Their goaltender was outstanding."

UMD, who had a 5-3 shots on goal advantage until it was whistled for its first infraction, was unable to keep a rhythm after it was called for four penalties over a nine minute span in the opening stanza.  That included a fatal three penalties over a 2:26 snap late in the third that resulted in two Badger goals and a 3-0 advantage into the first intermission.

Black, who had been ill all day, was a game-time decision and ended up only able to play the first 20 minutes of the game.  Rookie Evelina Suonpää, who has been with the Bulldogs for two and a half weeks, manned the pipes for the second and third periods in her first action in a UMD jersey.  Black left the game with seven saves, while Suonpää made 19 stops in her debut.

Badger senior Blayre Turnball netted three of Wisconsin's power play goals -- a UW record -- on the evening.  Wisconsin outshot UMD 31-20 in the game, and senior winger Zoe Hickel and senior defenseman Brigette Lacquette each recorded a team-high three shots for the Bulldogs.  UMD was 0-of-5 with an extra skater, though two of those power plays were less than a minute due to a Bulldog picking up an infraction.  In all, UMD spent 19 minutes -- almost an entire period -- down a skater.

The road only goes up in rankings for UMD (17-8-5, 12-8-4), who will travel to Minneapolis, Minn. next weekend to face the No. 2 University of Minnesota at Ridder Arena.  Friday's game is set for 7:07 p.m., while Saturday's showdown will begin at 4:07 p.m.
