The University of Minnesota Duluth claimed a couple of wins in two different fashions Monday morning in Clermont, Fla. The Bulldogs outslugged Southern Connecticut State University 15-8 to kick off the day before securing a 4-1 triumph over Philadelphia University behind a two-hit, 10-strikeout performance from sophomore southpaw
Sam Hartmann.
The Bulldogs, who moved to 12-5 on the year, pounded out 20 hits (their most a 21-hit outing against the University of North Dakota on April 23, 2007) in the opener and rallied for 11 runs in the final three innings. UMD and the Owls were knotted at 2-2 through four innings before the Bulldogs took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth. They scored eight one inning later, sending 11 batters to the plate. During that stretch eight straight Bulldogs reached safely (seven had hits), including freshman third baseman
Becky Smith, who belted her fourth homer of the season. She finished with four RBI while going 4-for-5 with one double. Freshman left fielder
Alexia Klaas also homered - a solo shot in the top of the seventh inning --Â and was one of three other Bulldogs with three hits, joining senior first baseman
Jordan Rice and junior right fielder
Ashley Schilling. Junior
Cayli Sadler relieved Hartmann with one on and no outs in the bottom of the fourth and held Southern Connecticut to just one hit the rest of the way en route to earning the victory, her fifth in nine decisions this spring.
Against Philadelphia, Smith led off the top of the fourth inning with a single, stole second and then came in on Lewis's two-out RBI single to put the Bulldogs ahead for good at 2-1. Smith had two of UMD's six hits as did Lewis, who added a double. Hartmann, now 7-1, gave up hits to the first two batters she faced, but slammed the door after that, allowing just four baserunners (all on walks). Her 10 strikeouts equaled a career best (she's hit that mark three times in her last five starts).
Next for the Bulldogs is a Tuesday twi-night doubleheader against the University of Bridgeport in Clermont.
