LOWENHIELM STRIKES TWICE IN BULLDOGS' 3-2 WIN OVER ST. CLOUD STATE

MIchelle Lowenhielm had two goals -- including the game-winner -- Saturday against St. Cloud State.
Box Score

The only requirement for the Bulldogs goals Saturday afternoon at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center was that the scorers just had to be Swedish.

Michelle Lowenhielm and Maria Lindh netted all three of the University of Minnesota Duluth's goals -- Lowenhielm netting two, including the game-winner -- to help UMD beat St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn. 3-2.  With the win, the Bulldogs salvage the series split and improve to 2-1-1 against the Huskies on the year.  UMD, who will finish the regular season in sixth place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, secured a trip to Bemidji, Minn. Friday night in next weekend's first round of the WCHA playoffs.

The Huskies struck early -- 1:09 into the game early on a goal by Hannah Potrykus.  But Lowenhielm responded less than 10 minutes later, burying a feed from Morgan Morse and Sidney Morin to knot the game at 1-1 at the 11:04 mark.

Lindh then pushed the Bulldogs out to a 2-1 lead late in the second period, netting a power play goal at 17:12.  Lindh's sixth goal of the year also credited blueliners Jessica Healey and Catherine Daoust with assists on the tally.

UMD held that lead until 14:11 of the third period, when SCSU equalized and brought the game to a 2-2 tie.  The Bulldogs had the answer, however, and exactly 47 seconds later Lowenhielm teamed up with Morin and Haley to net the game-winner for UMD.

Despite outshooting the Huskies 30-27 in the game and 21-12 in the first 40 minutes, the Bulldogs were outshot 15-9 in the third period.  Senior goaltender Kayla Black made 25 saves for UMD en route to her 54th win between the pipes for the Bulldogs.  Already fourth all-time at UMD for goaltender wins (54-44-16), Black is now just three triumphs shy of the No. 3 spot held by former netminder Jennifer Harss (57-44-16).

UMD (13-20-1, 10-17-1) will pick up a new slate thanks to the WCHA playoffs, and that new season will begin for the Bulldogs Friday afternoon at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn.  Game times for all three possible games in the best-of-three series are set for 2:07 p.m., with Saturday and if needed, Sunday.

BULLDOG NOTES:  Five players registered two or more points in a single game in the series — Michelle Lowenhielm (2g), Sidney Morin (2a), Ashleigh Brykaliuk (1g, 1a), Lara Stalder (2a) and Michela Cava (1g, 1a) … UMD improves to 56-11-5 all-time against the Huskies and is 7-1-2 in its last 10 outings against SCSU.
