Following a 7-2 setback to unbeaten Bethel University on Friday night at the Arrowhead Tennis Center, the University of Minnesota Duluth returned to the road -- and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition -- the next day in Bemidji, Minn., where it split a pair of matches. The Bulldogs were upended 6-3 by Bemidji State University, but then bounced back to down the University of Minnesota Crookston 7-2 later that day for their first victory of the 2016 season.
In the non-conference match with Bethel (6-0 overall), junior
Drew DeCorsey posted a straight-set No. 1 singles win and also paired up with sophomore
Shelby Benkofske to prevail at No. 1 doubles. Sophomores
Jillian Klasen (No. 4) and
Katie Baasch (No. 5) accounted for UMD's two singles triumphs against Bemidji State while Baasch and junior
Kaitlin Wohnoutka were victorious at No. 3 doubles. UMD swept all three doubles matches from Minnesota Crookston (DeCorsey and Benkofske at No. 1; Klasen and sophomore
Kelsey Zetah at No. 2; and Baasch and sophomore
Karly Weber at No. 3) before getting singles victories from Wohnoutka (No. 3), Klasen (No. 4), Baasch (No. 5) and rookie
Mikayla Gottwalt (No. 6).
Baasch wound up going 2-1 in both singles and doubles over the weekend while Klasen finished with a 2-1 singles mark to move to a team-leading 4-3 on the year.
The Bulldogs (1-6 overall; 1-3 NSIC) will be in Winona this weekend for NSIC engagments against Winona State (Friday) and Upper Iowa University (Saturday).
