The University of Minnesota Duluth continued on its diet of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference road competition during the final weekend of February, posting a convincing 7-2 win over Winona State University on Friday night before succumbing 9-0 to Upper Iowa University the following afternoon in Winona, Minn.
The Bulldogs, now 2-7 overall and 2-4 in the NSIC, got off to a promising start against Winona State as it swept all three doubles matches -- junior
Drew DeCorsey and
Shelby Benkofske at No. 1, sophomores
Jillian Klasen and
Kelsey Zetah at No. 2 and sophomores
Katie Baasch and
Karly Weber at No. 3. Klasen (No. 4) and Baasch (No. 5) went on deliver straight set singles victories while junior
Kaitlin Wohnoutka (No. 3) and freshman
Rachel Menke (No. 6) won 6-0, 6-0 in their respective matches.
Wohnoutka was the lone Bulldog to take her Upper Iowa opponent to a tie breaker in doubles as she bounced back from a 6-0 first set loss to win the second set 6-4 (but ultimately fell 10-6 in the tie breaker). The Peacocks are unbeaten in NSIC play at 6-0 to go with a 7-1 mark in all matches.
Klasen is a team-leading 5-4 in singles this season while DeCorsey and Benkofske sport that same doubles mark.
The Bulldogs will take a break from NSIC activity this Saturday (March 5) to face a pair of NCAA III schools -- Morningside College and Gustavus Adolphus College -- in St. Peter, Minn. They'll then be idle until April 2.
