BULLDOGS FALL TWICE SATURDAY IN TRIANGULAR AT GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE

In its final non-conference road activity of the 2016 season, the University of Minnesota Duluth dropped  pair of matches Saturday at the Swanson Center in St. Peter, Minn.

The Bulldogs, now 2-9 on the year, dropped a 6-3 decision to Morningside College Saturday afternoon before falling 8-1 to host Gustavus Adolphus that night.

Against Morningside, UMD opened doubles play with an 8-4 victory at No. 2 from sophomores Jillian Klasen and Kelsey Zetah. Zetah then proceed to post a straight-set singles win (No. 4) as did sophomore Shelby Benkofske, who was making her collegiate No. 1 singles debut. Klasen (at No. 3) and junior co-captain Kaitlin Wohnoutka (No. 2) both lost in a third set tie-breaker, which proved to be the difference in the match. Wohnoutka's tie breaker marathon went 24 points before being settled.

Benkofske and Killian teamed up at No. 2 doubles to defeat Riley Abeyeskera and Caitln Steffen, 8-3, for UMD's only triumph against Gustavus Adolphus.  Benkofske (No. 1) and rookie Mikayla Gottwalt (No. 6) both took their singles opponents to a third set tie breaker before succumbing.

UMD won't return to the courts until it hosts Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rivals Southwest Minnesota State University and Minnesota State University-Mankato on April 2-3.
