LATE LONGBALLS SPRING BULLDOGS TO WINS OVER OHIO DOMINICAN & SLIPPERY ROCK

A trio of Coon Rapids, Minnesota natives each launched a home run as the University of Minnesota Duluth swept a pair of nine-inning outings over Ohio Dominican University and Slippery Rock University at Lake Myrtle Park field in Auburndale, Florida.

UMD (4-4) got home runs from senior first baseman Alex Wojciechowski (7), junior outfielder Grant Farley (2), and freshman third baseman Tyler Wojciechowski (1), defeating Ohio Dominican 5-3 in the opener before knocking off Slippery Rock 10-8 in the afternoon outing. Senior right-hander Wes Mleziva (2) picked up a save in each game, striking out four in a combined 2.0 innings of work.

Ohio Dominican (5-2) jumped out on sophomore left-hander Marcus Frederickson early in game one, plating a pair of runs in the opening inning. He'd calm down from there and toss five total innings, allowing just the two earned on six hits while striking out five.  The younger Wojciechowski would get the scoring started for the Bulldogs on the day, launching his first collegiate home run, a solo shot, in the second. An errant throw by the Panthers' third baseman the next inning plated a pair, giving UMD its first lead of the game as sophomore outfielder Brett Milazzo and junior shortshop Brian Pierce came around to score.

ODU tied the game with an unearned run against Frederickson in the top of the fifth inning, a run scoring from second as Farley uncorked an outfield assist, throwing out a baserunner heading to third behind him that prevented further damage in the inning. The gave way to four innings of hitless work by the Bulldpen 'pen, with freshman lefty Ryan Cunningham picking up his first collegiate victory while throwing 1.1 innings, allowing just a walk. Farley became the hero once again in the bottom of the eighth, launching his second home run of the season and putting the Bulldogs on top once again. A. Wojciechowski would come around to score on a double by senior second baseman Jimmy Heck later in the inning to add some insurance before Mleziva shut the door in the ninth inning.

UMD 10, Slippery Rock 8
UMD jumped out on Slippery Rock (3-11) in the second game of the day for the Bulldogs, scoring two runs in the first and three in the second. A. Wojciechowski drove in the first run of the game, an RBI single that plated Milazzo. Farley would later score on a groundball off the bat of senior third baseman Kyle Comer. The same two would come up again in the second, with Wojciechowski doubling home Farley and Milazzo before coming back around to score himself on a single by Comer.

The Rock began a comeback, scoring a run in the second and two in the third against sophomore left-hander Tommy Hanson. They'd eventually take the lead with three unearned runs in the fifth inning. Hanson would finish allowing 10 hits in 4.2 innings of work, striking out six but just giving up one earned run while finishing his day trailing 6-5. Freshman right-hander Adam Hallberg relieved Hanson in the fifth, and picked up his first collegiate win as A. Wojciechowski launched a two-run homer in the next inning to give UMD a permanet lead.

T. Wojciechowski, Farley, and Comer each added RBI singles across the next two innings. Heck went from second base to the mound for the second time this season, tossing 2.0 innings and striking out one while allowing just one hit and one walk. He'd return to the infield and hand the ball off to Mleziva in the ninth, as the righty picked up his second save of the day and the season, striking out two Rock players.

Six Bulldogs had multiple hits against Slippery Rock, including a 4-for-4 game for Farley. A. Wojciechowski finished the game 3-for-5 with five runs batted in. Milazzo and Farley scored three runs each.

UMD will take a much-needed and well-deserved day of rest on Wednesday afternoon before returning to action on Thursday morning in Florida. The Bulldogs will take on Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Wayne State (Neb.) College in a non-conference, nine-inning game one at 9:15 a.m. ET before taking on Walsh (Ohio) University in game two at 12:45 p.m. ET.
