AFTER VASKE'S GAME ONE WIN, NO. 16 UMD SLUGS TO LEAD BEFORE GAME TWO SUSPENSION

UPDATE 5/7/16 5:45 p.m. Following the resumption of the game on Saturday morning, UMD got a four-inning save (2) from senior left-hander Spencer Diedrich in his return to the mound. He tossed the final four frames of the resumed game, which UMD led 10-6 after five completed innings on Friday night the game's recess due to darkness. He struck out three, closing out a bullpen victory for junior right-hander Colton Sinning (1-1). After the Bulldogs scored each of their first 10 runs via the home run, junior shortstop Kyle Hoffman singled home Diedrich in the seventh inning to add to the lead. U-Mary got an RBI groundout in the ninth but got no closer in an 11-7 Bulldog win. Nicholas Stobbe (1-6) took the defeat on the mound for the Marauders, throwing the five innings on Friday night while Charles Bielejeski threw the final three innings on Saturday morning, allowing one run on three hits.

After a lengthy rain delay, the No. 16 University of Minnesota Duluth hit five home runs to take a 10-6 lead over the University of Mary before game two of the teams' Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader was suspended due to darkness on Friday afternoon.

Senior right-handed Austin Vaske (6-1) allowed just a pair of runs in 5.2 innings as UMD (34-11, 27-6 NSIC) rolled to a 9-2 victory in the day's first game before lightning and rain set in, delaying the start of game two by two hours. Freshman designated hitter Tyler Wojciechowski slugged two (6) of UMD's five homers, and senior second baseman Jimmy Heck hit a grand slam (16) to surpass what was previously the Bulldogs' single season record for longballs. The man who already broke that record, senior first baseman Alex Wojciechowski, added his 31st home run of the season in the first inning against Marauders starter Nicholas Stobbe, who gave up all 10 runs on nine hits and three walks in his five innings of work.

U-Mary (8-38, 6-26 NSIC) got a complete-game outing from McKeon Meyhoff (0-7) in game one, but the lefty allowed 17 UMD hits and nine earned runs while striking out just two. Seven players had multiple hits for the Bulldogs in the opener, led by freshman left fielder Eric Yachinich, who was 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and three RBIs. Senior third baseman Kyle Comer added three hits and knocked in a pair, while junior catcher Marco Lucarelli was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Vaske gave way to freshman Ryan Cunningham in the sixth inning, and the southpaw pitched a perfect final four outs for UMD. A. Wojciechowski ripped a double down the line, drove in a run, and score in game, and he has now reached base in 44-of-46 games this season.

The Bulldogs and Marauders will return to the diamond Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. for the resumption of game two of the series, followed by Saturday's scheduled doubleheader which will now include two seven-inning games.
