The University of Minnesota Duluth did something that no Bulldog club had done in 33 years Saturday afternoon when it throttled Minot State University 37-0 in its annual Homecoming Game at James S. Malosky Stadium. That gave the Bulldogs, who took down Northern State University 41-0 one week ago in Aberdeen, S.D., their first back-to-back shut outs since the end of the 1984 season.
"Our defense is playing with a lot of confidence right now," said UMD head coach Curt Wiese. "Our guys came out with a lot of fire today and are continuing to get better every week"
UMD, which has now won five straight games, got touchdowns from four different players and three second-half field goals, including a pair from sophomore Dan Branger, while defeating the Beavers for the sixth time in six lifetime tries. UMD has outscored Minot State 263-23 in those six triumphs.

The Bulldogs balanced offensive attack generated 236 yards on the ground and 193 yards through the air. Redshirt freshman quarterback John Larson, making his second collegiate start -- and first at home, completed 12 of 20 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns three quarters of work. He also rushed for a game-high 97 yards on just 12 carries. Junior wide out Jason Balts was Larson's primary target, catching a team-leading five catches for 98 yards.
UMD acame away with a season-high three picks, two of which it converted into points. Cornerbacks Justic'e King and Jake Goodman, the only two true freshmen to see playing time this season, each had an interception. Senior safety Kale Boomer was credited with a team-best five total tackles and also had the Bulldogs' only fumble recovery.

Next up for the Bulldogs is a Thursday night NSIC North Division showdown at Bemidji State University. Both clubs are 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the NSIC North Division.
"We're feeling good," said Balts, who paces the 2017 Bulldogs in receptions with 40. "The game plan hasn't changed; it's just doing what we do and doing it better. We're excited about the upcoming game against Bemidji and we're looking forward to hopefully keeping things rolling"
